I did the Pinsent Masons one over the summer. I found it quite useful and interesting in terms of the actual tasks. I discussed it briefly on my application and in my interview. I got the vac scheme, so it definitely doesn't hurt! 😅
I seem to remember doing a non-selective Inside Sherpia scheme for a firm and it telling me not to put it as "work experience". They gave a certificate so that participants could add it under "licenses and certificates".
I would say that commercial awareness is more than just having some knowledge of events in that sector. Realistically, they aren't going to expect applicants to know a sector inside out. Commercial awareness is ultimately a skill - being able to analyse a trend/development/story/scenario and...
My advice would be to do as many *high quality* applications as you can. There comes a point where you can repeat chunks of your answers anyway. It's mainly just the "why this firm" and specific commercial awareness questions which require tailored research.
I only ended up applying for 7...
Thank you! I had a firm (which I had to reject due to conflicting dates) say that they may be able to offer me a place on their Easter scheme. I do want to do the scheme. But I wouldn't want to then be put into a situation (if I'm successful) where I would have to cancel the two summer schemes I...
Yeah, that is strange! I did the AC for DLA too - I thought I heard them mention that they weren't doing the full three weeks if it's virtual (or maybe that they didn't do three weeks last year?). From what I understood, the first week of their scheme is more of a social/networking week, with...
A purely hypothetical scenario/question relating to this: if a firm offered a TC following an Easter scheme, and I had vac schemes secured for summer (with firms I preferred), would it be better to ask for some kind of extension? Or to accept and then renege, if successful with one of the...
To some extent it depends on which office you applied to, since I think that the practice areas do vary between the different offices. Which firms did you say, out of curiousity?
It's funny because we approached the same situation from opposite approaches! The firm I turned down have more TC places (although it's hard to gage how many they allocate to vac schemers) - I just felt that I might be a better fit for the other firm and that this could serve me better in...
I was in the same position - two of my three clashed. On the one hand, it was difficult because I really liked the firm I had to turn down, I worked so hard to get that offer, and that firm had more trainee places available. On the other hand, I just slightly preferred the firm which it clashed...
Of the five assessment centres I attended virtually this year, I found that all bar one had a healthy gender mix (in one I was the only "guy" in a group of ten). That one AC had the best ethnic diversity - the others have been disproportionately white applicants.
Not going to lie, as a politics nerd I would love this as a question! 😅
I do get the sense that applicants often tend to forget about politics when developing their commercial awareness. There's a reason politics is the first letter in "PESTLE". It would definitely benefit to spend some time...
This might be a silly question but have you mentioned that applied for a direct TC and explained your circumstances? Because I would hope that a firm would at least make an effort to accommodate you, given that they're the ones who effed up here...
