This might sound like a stupid question, but if an application asks for references, what exactly are they looking for?

I am almost finished with my Paul Hastings SVS application and it asks for two references, but I don’t know what that means lmao. This is one of the perks of a first application cycle. 🤣

Is this like an academic reference so maybe a lecturer or professor from university, or is this an employer reference? Is it kind of like the UCAS teacher reference thing? Please help. 🥲
Typically they ask for one academic and one professional - academic should probably be a lecturer you may have had contact with, professional probs a superior
