I thought my application to Burges Salmon was quite amazing, but got rejected, if anyone that got an AC INVITE is kind enough to share what theirs looked like pls dm . I got a W&C VI i'm also happy to share what mine was like for anyone interested.

Rejected from A&O Summer Vac scheme after a 3 month internship at their Paris Office (which they extended because they liked me!).
I got a near perfect SJT and have perfect grades + double first at Oxbridge
Mad that there's not even any feedback !

Hey @wanttosolicit . I am sorry about the rejection. I understand how frustrating that can be given your past experience with the firm. However, please do not let that put you down. A three month internship at the firm positions you as a candidate well-versed to apply to many other firms. The experience you have gained will contain a lot of transferable skills you can use in future applications - so aim to clearly highlight your motivations and competencies at the application stage. I believe due to the length of your internship, a direct TC application could also be beneficial for you to apply for in the future. An exposure to the Parisian legal market also broadens your understanding of the globally interconnected nature of law firm’s operations. Goodluck with the applications, we’re rooting for you !

Ahhh but did you find the lost sword of king Arthur sir? Did you fight the nemean lion sir? Did you find the needle in the haystack?

In all seriousness sometimes it comes down to luck I am realising - I imagine you also have fantastic work experience. Sometimes they are ticking boxes and someone had that little bit more they wanted.

Anyone know if Irwin Mitchell applications are rolling or non-rolling?

Hey @marisachr , I have just done some research and found that applications were non-rolling 5 years ago. Given the time gap, I can’t be sure the position is the same in 2024. Usually when the position is unclear in such situations, I recommend candidates submitting applications as soon as reasonably possible, due to the need to focus on quality and getting in the application before the deadline.

I have sent an email to their graduate recruitment to inquire on this, and will let you know when I get a response back.

They tell you in the email exactly what competencies they’ll be asking questions on so I was able to prep fully for 2/3 then only got thrown off by 1 Q, but only because I used all the good facts for the Q before. I’m a bit of a waffler though so not too sure how I did overall.

B&B has been so good with navigating applicants through each stage of the app process (unlike 99% of firms) so I wouldn’t worry too much if you get the invite. Good luck!

Hi, I am just wondering what the general approach in competency interviews is regarding whether you should use examples on your application form, examples from the work experience section or answers to application questions?

Hello @Tom smith . For answers on the application form itself (application answers), definitely go ahead and touch on these in interviews. However, I want to stress the importance of not completely regurgitating the points, especially to the questions on ‘why commercial law’ and ’why X firm’. The reason is because your passion to pursue a career at the firm should not be solely contained in 200-300 words and the interview would be a chance to talk a lot more about this. You will often find in most interviews, questions coming up requiring you to expand on the application form (provided your interviewers have access to this form). Thus, well prepared research needs to be carried out to significantly demonstrate why a firm appeals to you over others. As you can imagine, multiple firms will have the same practice areas and similar clients, but finding a niche interest the firm is great in will help distinguish you from other candidates and convey your passions clearly in interviews.

The same approach applies to the work experience section as well. The tasks a candidate inclues in that section are non-exhaustive and do not cover the full entirety of work completed during the placement. The way I see it, the answers on your application form demonstrate your motivations, whereas your work experience demonstrates your competencies - your skills. So, it‘s worth including examples beyond what’s already seen in that section. I believe the work section ties together answers for situational, competency, and motivational questions through specific examples. You could certainly use the same examples for each when asked in an interview, but using different examples each time will help showcase a diversified portfolio and skillset.

Overall, use all the three sections you highlighted in your question and place a specific emphasis on expansion.

It was a mix of motivational / competency for me, but you might get a CA focused question so I’d prep for that too just incase, as well as the competencies they mention in the email☺️

for the mishcon vac scheme, the section on activities and achievements, did people put uni societies? what are we meant to put there? cause we can only do 4 work experiences, so figured it makes sense to do societies.

Thanks for the question. We’re glad you’ve found the tips useful!

Given the word count of most application questions, I would say focus less on how HL can help them, although it will certainly be beneficial to do so. You should ideally go deep into the impact on HL’s clients. Another point is that any candidate isn’t expected to know exactly how a law firm will address these commercial issues as all this will become apparent on the job. However, if the word count permits, you could touch on general methods HL could employ to deal with the issue, whether this is investing in new experienced personnel to advise tech giants more efficiently and accurately. This is presumed that the commercial issue in question is in relation to the rising complexities surrounding emerging technologies and upcoming regulations in that sphere.
