I was musing on this last night. I was watching a youtube streamer, who has about 1500 videos each about 30-120 minutes, and in his more recent videos (compared to the earliest) he has a nice desk microphone, a better camera, and his introduction style sounds more fluent and confident.

I accidentally clicked on an older video, and while the main stream (the game being streamed) is identical in quality, the difference in video and sound quality of his voice/inlaid video of himself is very noticeable, and makes a big difference to the overall quality of the stream.

I was thinking therefore that it's likely that if you have a nice camera and microphone, then it's going to create an immediate better impression than if you are using just whatever your laptop comes with.

Funny you mention that, actually. I used to stream on Twitch, so I have the whole setup and am comfortable recording myself! Whenever I attend online firm events, I always look and sound better than their representatives 🤣 I never understood why they don't have better equipment. Or lecturers, for that matter (shout out covid university). The only issue is that your quality will be reduced depending on what video interview system you have to go through, so it might not end up as nice as you'd have hoped. It should still be noticeably better, though!

What's your setup, in equipment terms?

I haven't applied yet, but I think I came across another post from many weeks ago too that said that apparently there are 2x500 word questions as part of the 'blended assessment'. Someone more informed can provide the details...

I'm surprised they haven't mentioned it in the email lol

Hi, how long did it take for the SJ test to come through? I applied a week ago and I haven't received anything yet. The website says it will be sent shortly after the application is submitted. Thanks :)

Is this why they asked on their application form for one of their 500 word questions “how do business generate and maintain a profit.” These guys were trying to get some ideas from us lmao. Icl it’s clever on their part. I hope they took some detailed notes. 😂
in my ff ac last year got asked what the optimal way to make money as a deep sea mining start up would be, and what would be better technology to use to mine than what they already had

girl idk i just want to do the vac scheme

I’ve probably asked this question at least 10x by now but has anyone heard from Travers Smith or Ropes & Gray at all? Low-key starting to crash out from waiting this long lmao. 😂🥲
My fear is that TS may have given out all their interviews already.

Looking at the negatives, they only interview 5% of those who apply, according to Chamber Student. So very few people will hear back before they send out PFOs, presumably in a couple of weeks time.

However, only one person has posted on here they’ve got an interview (and there must be way more than 20 TS applicants on here) and people on the TCLA (I think) submit better applications than the average.

So maybe there’s still a bit of hope, but it’s dwindling for me.

Camera: Logitech C920
Mic: Shure PGA58
Audio interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd gen

The PC itself was prebuilt. i5-10400F. RTX 3060.
Thanks. Not too pricey! I looked at a video yesterday and they were saying entry-level webcam is Insta360 2C (£130!)

Honestly I'm partly wondering about doing it on my phone; only problem is my phone also sucks, so maybe I need to buy a new phone (had it for almost 3 years now, Redmi)!!!

At this point idk what’s worse, this, or being asked to choose what fruit I would be. I’m still considering my options for that question: I’m either going to be an apple or a tomato. I might even decide I want to be an orange. I’m not too sure yet. 🍊

Mine hasn't come through yet either. Since the email confirmation said they'll 'review' apps, I left it as is. Wasn't sure there was much to 'review', but also didn't want to annoy the emerging talent team lol.

Hi guys. If I really like a firm but I have missed their open day are there any other ways to find out more about them? I have messaged some trainees on LinkedIn and received no reply, not sure if it's because they are too busy or something wrong with my message. I'm wondering if I will be disadvantaged if I apply to their vs without having attended any of their events... This is so annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any advice would be really appreciated!

No news from Ropes & Gray. I looked through last year's thread and it looks like people heard back around the 26th of Feb. So perhaps next week we'll hear back?

That's so true! One of my questions at the end of the interview was about how they've been losing a lot of revenue and profit etc... and how the firm has been downhill for a while and what their strategy is in that regard... Technically, online the firm blames it on them leaving Moscow, so I specifically said that, obviously leaving Russia played a role in this, but besides this what are the other reasons (because leaving Russia isn't that convincing, especially considering that they're technically a US-UK firm...) But hey, one down, 19 applications to go 😂

Lmao I was similar when I interviewed with them. My last question was centred on their low retention rates 🤣 Poor interviewers 🤣

Honestly, don't stress it. In the three cycles of apps I've done so far, I've had 4 ACs and have now obtained 3 VS' (one in first cycle, two in this one) and none of them were with firms I attended an Open Day for.

Instead, I use Legal Cheek, Chambers Student Guide, Legal500 and the firm's website for my research. Note that some firms do not have either a Legal Cheek or Chambers page, but normally have at least one. Then, you can use what you find in that research to search further - eg if you see a client on the Legal500 then can research further into the work they did for them.

Open Days are good, but they're DEFINITELY not a make or break.
