Question for anyone who's done vac schemes before - how do you actually go about the above? Are you just encouraged to approach people at random or is there more guidance during the vac scheme itself?

Arguably my biggest concern about doing well on my vac schemes is the networking side of things - definitely doesn't come naturally 😅.
I think that different firms have different approaches to this- on one of my vac schemes there were quite a few opportunities to network with people across the firm and grad rec made us aware that we don't necessarily need to actively set up coffee chats for this reason but on another scheme we were encouraged to 'walk the floors' and show that initiative in asking for work/ questions

my advice would be to not set up coffee chats for the sake of it/ because you think it would look good, but if you are genuinely interested in speaking to someone for a particular reason. with that being said though make sure you are still showing enthusiasm and interest whenever there are opportunities to network and also make sure you are delivering work to a high standard. I hated networking too so I definitely get you! you will be okay so long as you perform well on tasks and come off as genuinely interested/ personable

I spilt an entire glass of water over myself at an AC yesterday during my interview and I would still rather relive that experience than have to see another post from RonRod.

Someone asked who W&C’s competitors were, likely in preparation for an interview answer. Your direct response was:

“Literally every other US law firm...?”

What an absurd conclusion I jumped to when you said their competitors were all US firms. It can be directly inferred from your answer that, presumably, that’s who you regard W&C’s competitors to be.

Would love to see your Watson Glaser score, sure you’d thrive on the inferences section.

Now, is there a way to mute people on this forum? You’ve had your 15 minutes of fame, Rod.
So, by your logic, if someone asks you "why did you apply for W&C"? And your response was "They have a cool office and they pay a lot of money." Can it be "directly inferred from your answer" that you're going to say that exact response everywhere you go? Of course not, you're going to adapt responses based on who you're speaking to, expand on certain points, simplify things etc.

I would also love to see your WG scores with that logic...

hey! don't worry ik the prospect of it can seem daunting and quite awkward but it isn't the trainees/associates/partners first rodeo! they are all aware of how vac schemes work and are used to being asked for coffees by other people on the scheme/in the past. I'd say ping them an email/teams message and briefly introduce yourself + a line about how you're interested in their practice area/their experience for XYZ reasons and would love to chat about it further. they will be absolutely fine with that :) also remember to come prepared with questions to the coffee meetings. all the best!

February has been a crazy month on TCLA

    1. Penine valley sparked controversy on D&I leading to their removal and a huge debate
    2. Someone mocked another person for reapplying to the same firm that rejected them???
    3. Someone spilt water on themselves having a terrible AC! (You got this girl)😭
4.RonRod has mentioned US firms, cars and even fast food industries but their point still concluded most on the forum not liking them

Stay tuned for the March TCLA wrapped where we expect less attitude and more offers🙏😩

As an introvert, networking was my worst fear but there are several things I find make it a little easier:

    1. Speak about your interests to your supervisor or trainee buddy: You could ask: "I'm also interested in x practice area, do you know anyone within that practice area that would be open to speaking with me?" (I did this and was introduced to associates/trainees who were happy to spend 15-30mins during the scheme).

    2. During vac scheme events where associates/trainees attend, start a convo and ask if they would be interested in talking further and arrange a chat whenever they're available.

    3. See if there are other events during the scheme at the firm (like firm-group events/multicultural events) and attend if you have time. I attended some during a vac scheme and used that to network more.

    4. Use the firm database/Linkedin to network with the leads of network/affinity groups, and ask to arrange to talk with them about their mission/updates etc. If you show a genuine interest, I'm sure they would be happy to arrange a coffee chat.

[Don't forget to keep a diary of the people you connect with and what you discussed so you can discuss it during the TC interview if asked).

Edit- as others have mentioned, there is honestly no pressure - these tips are just if you have a genuine interest in something and feel a coffee chat would benefit you.

Yes, I've been offered two if you must know. But I've also received a banking offer too so I'm in the process of determining which career path to go down atm.
