TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2022-23

I have a final interview coming up soon with a law firm in the UAE. I was wondering how to answer commercial questions in the interview, in terms of biggest commercial trends and risks in the Middle East currently. Can someone advise about which current commercial trends they’re aware of, or where to look for this info?
IPO boom in the Middle East, a Qatari bid to buy Man Utd for a world record price of £5 billion, these events demonstrate strong private sector investment in the ME, and strong growth prospects for law firms should they decide expand their ME offerings, also found the recent business leaders conference hosted by Rishi Sunak quite interesting. Gerry Murphy, the chairman of Burberry made a really captivating point about how Brexit no longer provides businesses with VAT refunds, all the more case for stronger business investments in other regions such as the ME. Hopefully this helps and good luck with your interview

Is there any issue with seeking an update/a clarification about where you are on the reserve list for a vac scheme?
No - not at issue to do this at all. You may want to ask if there is a deadline to which the latest date you could be offered a place so you get that clarity too. You could also ask if you are in a certain position on the waiting list.

Hello!

Has anyone got any tips on VI's. I got a VI invitation from White & Case on April 15, but I got rejected.

I made it to a few VI's this application cycle but I was unsuccessful in all of them. It's disheartening since so much time is invested in researching firms and writing applications.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Does anyone know if clifford chance recruitment is CV blind, particularly at the final interview stage, have the legal team seen candidates' application forms and pre-recorded virtual interviews? - especially for the middle east summer vac scheme
Hi. I had a friend who did an AC with them last year in Dubai. Even though they asked not to upload a CV, my friend still uploaded one and they were holding a copy of it in their hands and asking questions directly from it. Also, they questioned my friend about a deal he mentioned in his application so I am assuming they do read the application before hand. About the VI, I have no idea.

Does what modules you enrol on matter apart from the ability to demonstrate an interest in a relevant area of law that a firm may specialise in?
I do law, and I am thinking about picking a discovery module for next year.

I'd recommend practicing answers to possible questions with the specified prep time limit, and record yourself while speaking. It's often tough to structure your thoughts in the given prep time, since it is sometimes only 15 seconds. So practicing answers, and just being familiar with the broad outline of your answers, really helps.

Also, keep an eye on body language. Try to keep your body language and voice modulation as natural as possible, answers in VIs can come across as robotic or rehearsed.

For W&C, I found that researching the firm and their USP in-depth, and relating it back to myself while doing this research really helped. This is especially since their questions can be very centered around these motivations.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! Was it for a TC or vac scheme?

Anyone know how long W&C take to reply post AC? They said at the end of the interview I should expect to hear within 1 to 2 weeks, but it’s been almost 3 weeks now and I still haven’t heard anything.

Should I presume that’s bad news?

how do you usually go about requesting feedback for an AC? do you just ask grad rec by email? and is the format of the feedback written or verbal.. or does this all just depend on the firm?

You can request it via email. Different firms take different approaches to feedback - some will choose written feedback, while others will do it over the phone.
