That’s so interesting. Just looked into this and 104 out of the 347 judges Who have ever sat on the Supreme Court also have come from private practice. Obviously the most famous one from private practice rn is Brett Kavanaugh (Ex- K&E). Anyway needless to say MC firms are fighting one heck of an uphill battle.

The other angle is not just relationships, but also pure economics. America has the largest, most profitable legal market in the world by quite a substantial margin, and its firms can rely on consistently profitable US briefs to subsidise lower returns in their newer overseas offices while they get themselves established. They can use that financial heft to pay more than the local incumbents and attract a significant amount of the talent by doing so. Because of the MC and SC's traditional lockstep culture (which is beginning to change, but not fast enough to prevent people who want to make serious money from leaving) and lower pay across the board, it is not a surprise that US firms have caught up with them so quickly.

Just received a VS offer for Addleshaw Goddard! In a little bit of shock to be honest because I didn't feel like the day went well. But I had a really strong interview and I think that pulled me over the line.

Do you mean in the US? I feel like 347 is way too large a number for their supreme court given the US justices serve for life haha - also remember that Barack and Michelle Obama met while summer associates at Sidley Austin!

Nobody does the revolving door quite like the Americans do! When I was an undergrad and just finishing my year abroad out there I did some work experience at a firm that specialised in communications law in Washington DC and like 2/3 of the partners I met had previously worked at the FCC (America's answer to Ofcom) or in some other form of federal regulatory agency.

Yeah just to add further evidence of this, my firm Gibson Dunn has an awful lot of lawyers who are ex-US DoJ which no doubt explains why it's so good for white-collar/investigations work

It was! They did mention that as being the weakest part of my performance in the feedback. But I did well enough in the other commercial awareness bits to compensate for it.

I got the impression from their emails that it is more holistic. Have they offered any feedback? I would maybe email to ask, that way you know where you can improve

Hey, I just got an email last week with brief info about it being with two partners and that they're looking to hold it towards the end of March with no specific dates yet!
