Afternoon Jessica,
I've just received the Dechert VI and I'm in two minds about whether I should do it or not. On one hand, I want to give myself as many chances as possible with different law firms, as I only have one VS lined up and two other Direct TC interviews, but that is no guarantee of...
Oh amazing! Very surprised. Didn't think they were still assessing people this late into spring! What are the questions like, if you don't mind me asking?
So I've just received an 'interview' invite from the 'Shortlister' platform for Dechert. Is this the VI? I'd pretty much given up on them at this point and the link looks a little dodgy. Pls advise!
Essentially it's the percentage of people you're better than. So if you're in the 99th percentile, you are better than 99% of other candidates who take the test. It's a very very American concept and they use it a lot in their standardised testing systems for exams like the SATs etc.
I had always worked under the assumption it was 50 because that's what an associate who I used to vaguely know there told me! But I'll defer to you on this as I was told this back in 2018 so probably out of date.
Fantastic! Who's the lucky firm?
As someone with a similar profile (at least when it comes to trying to get a TC) I think this is very motivating! Great job!
Huge congrats! You've done so well to get as many vacation schemes as you have. And CRS is an absolutely fantastic firm that is on the up. Everyone I've ever met from there has been amazingly friendly! You'll fit right in ;)
I'm at ULaw and can confirm this. I don't know what the arrangements are for the 3 core modules yet but so far every professional practice exam has been open book.
I had my solicitors' accounts exam last Friday. I was a little nervous too but it wasn't bad at all, as it was entirely open book. You'll get the hang of double entry fairly quickly and so as long as you have the formula in front of you it's just a case of applying the right one! Seems scary...
You make some good points, but I think on your second para, you should factor in that it's still not really about public confidence, but what the regulator deems to be relevant to upholding public confidence. On the SRA website they point to examples such as discriminatory conduct and violence...
I think the main thing is not to confuse professional ethics with commonplace morals. A solicitor or other professional's duties to his client and the profession are only tangentially aligned with what the general public would deem fair and just behaviour. If their behaviour isn't known to be...
Just remember that what matters is not how 'tricky' the questions are but what the firm's view of a successful score is. CC, for instance is notorious for having a bare 50% pass mark for its WG. I also know that when I did my Korn Ferry tests for Simmons & Simmons, they were exceptionally...
When I applied to King & Spalding this year they didn't use Allhires but their own bespoke application form that looked like it was designed to be printed out and handwritten! The old fashioned ways still live on to an extent!
It's not a PFO till its a PFO. Email graduate recruitment if you're curious to know where they're at. But I suspect the answer as to why they haven't gotten back to anyone is that they have been inundated with applications like all other moderately large commercial firms, and also had their app...
Really sorry to hear that mate! However, if I were to give some advice, it would be to not rely on what someone at the firm says unless they are a graduate recruiter at that firm or involved with recruitment in some way.
In my experience, the lawyers you speak to will universally want the best...
Video Interview with the Crown Prosecution Service! Defo one of my more out there law jobs that I applied to this cycle. Does anyone know what CPS VIs are like?
