The first stage was over video call now the second is in the office. Wasn't sure if this was really guideline/roadmap compliant let alone the expense, getting formal wear ready, arranging time off work at short notice.

Second this. I've had more questions about the restaurant job I did around vacations/LPC studies and my volunteering jobs than a week of work experience. A week really isn't anything to gain vast legal experience from anyway
Contact local law firms. Drop an email/CV to office managers/partners and perhaps state what areas you're interested in doing experience within. You may not get a response from all of them but it worked for me
My old housemate did a VS in a northern office, interviewed there for a London TC and got the offer. Its possible the firm will ask where you would like to do the TC unless they state you should apply for the office VS where you want to train
