Which firm is generally regarded as better? (I appreciate that this might be down to personal preference). Macfarlanes or Ashurst?
There are so many variables and I think you need to consider what you want from your career.
Rankings are good, but then it all comes down to you. I am not a big fan of Macfarlanes because is very old white, british and lacks of the international appeal I look for. However, I know nothing about Ashurst.

when people talk about commercial questions in interviews, what does this actually mean?
Can mean a number of things. Very often it'll be similar to what you find on an app - talk about a commercial story/topic, explain your interest, maybe relate it to the firm - decent variety within this but the same kind of bones. Could also involve discussing your interest in one of the firm's practice areas or sector specialisms.

Generally questions which test your commercial knowledge. It can be things like discussing a business story, legal developments, challenges/opportunities for clients/the firm/a particular industry. Then a conversation can be sparked from your response.

I doubt you'd be asked about business technicalities (e.g. equity/debt/financing etc.) in an interview alone, but you will be asked in a case study/written exercise/group exercise. Others may have a different experience!

I know this might be too much of an ask, but could @Jaysen perhaps leverage your network with graduate recruiters to get them to at least consider such initiatives? It would be extremely helpful!

I know there are former graduate recruiters such as @Jessica Booker, and current recruiters such as @Paul - Shearman & Sterling and @WillkieGemma on this forum. As a collective of current applicants, I think we would all appreciate your thoughts on such an initiative, and whether it would be feasible from the perspective of a recruiter.

Nice idea, but incredibly time consuming to actually do. The article makes it sound easy, but for those of us who see it from the recruiters' side - it's not a very easy thing to do at all. I'm not aware of a single organisation in any sector that implements a model like this - that's very telling. And it isn't because recruiters can't be bothered! ;)

Plus, in my experience, many candidates aren't rejected for a specific and discrete issue as the article suggests - you are being compared against everyone else who applies in that particular application round.

I try to do my best to produce informative articles/videos on how to improve an application that has been rejected, but I just can't see how it can be done on an individual level when we receive thousands of applications.

    Hey all, what would you say are the two biggest challenges facing key sectors within the legal industry (e.g technology, energy etc) at the moment?
