On a side note, and having seen all of these great pet posts, how possible would it be to own a dog and work in a typical City law firm? Just thinking about the time commitment the role requires and also the time commitment required to properly look after a dog!

Such a good question! I have the same concerns and would love some insight too. Been waiting my whole life to get a place of my own and get a dog but I also don’t want to get a puppy and leave him home alone 60% of the time :(

I imagine this is why professional dog walkers are so sought after in the city! Obviously though, at the beginning of our careers, the more cost-effective solutions the better I imagine so also very interested to hear how people make/have made it work :)

Honestly, you’ll need to be in a household where other people could help look after the dog, or an exceptional dog day care option (which is typically £25-30 a day in London).

100% agree with this. We have a cat (he's a maine coon and they require as much attention as dogs). My partner is a lawyer and I work full-time too, but there's overlap sometimes. He sometimes is stuck in the office until 8-9 after starting at 9am. If there wasn't two of us, this would be massively unfair on any pet. 😔

It's likely that when we get a dog in the future, we'll hire a dog walker daily too.

Just to add to this if it helps- my partner works from home and we have family who live less than 5 mins walk away as well. Buddy also goes for half days at a day care (the same people did all his puppy classes and took him on some training walks) and it was a social thing mostly, especially during the lockdowns when we wanted to get him socialised safely, but also to make sure he’s happy there if we do ever need to use their boarding services. Every time he comes back he’s so sleepy and they are very kind and send us little videos of him living his best life :D

I’m pretty sure this actually means 23.59 on the 1st June.
