Oh that is interesting - so are the trainee intake numbers posted on LegalCheek not exact numbers? I guess I’ve been mainly interviewing with US firms with a trainee intake less than 10 or so, and I got the sense that they would hire the exact number regardless of circumstances but your point definitely makes sense! Then again, a candidate who ends up being perfect throughout a vac scheme will have had to be really unlucky to not shine enough in an interview to get the vac scheme initially imo
Again, I'm talking in general terms here as opposed to specifics - I can't speak for every firm - but these will probably be approximate numbers, usually either based off the quoted number from the firm (which will be a general number which they give for general indications) or an average of confirmed intake numbers or something like that.

In terms of the exit interview example, this was just an example and won't be a rule by any means. I think an otherwise-perfect candidate would need to utterly crash and burn in an interview to be rejected purely on that basis in most instances.

Open question, completely unrelated to law...:

Does anyone have recommendations for new tunes to listen to? I've kinda played all my current playlists to death... put it this way, if they were vinyl they'd be worn through! Got quite varied taste, listen to a lot of Gerry Cinnamon/ Sam Fischer/ Lewis Capaldi/ Paolo Nutini but also into a lot of older rock/ prog rock like AC/DC, The Who/ Pink Floyd.

Any recommendations would be wonderful ❤️

Mainly AC/DC, The Who, some Motorhead, Black Sabbath, etc - heavier stuff isn't the sort of stuff I listen to when I'm working, though, pure road trip tunes.
Oh for sure, these are the tunes for casual listening, gym, or drafting something LONG!

For classics/alternative/things I like - I go for Alice in Chains, Deftones, Incubus, Tool, Mad Season, Nine Inch Nails, Mark Lanegan, Zero 7, UNKLE, Creed (if you want something a bit cheesy)

At the moment I'm listening to an awful lot of 'The The', New Order, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys...all of which are great alternative stuff from the 80s.

But if you like prog rock, maybe some System of a Down? Nine Inch Nails?Deftones? Muse (particularly their earlier albums, Origin of Symmetry is always a winner)? I'm terrible at new music recommendations, mainly because all the bands I listen to are old haha!

Not sure how wide your music taste is but there's some stuff!

Ah as soon as people like those bands (unfortunately I can't get into SOAD), I'm happy to take them down the rabbit hole. Code Orange has been the soundtrack to drafting numerous terms and conditions

Thank you all! Definitely going to surf through some of these over the next few days.

V true! Currently working on a c.20k-word course which I was commissioned for and you better believe I got some rock on in the background to keep me pumped right through it haha
It's gotta be done sometimes! Just need a good tune to kick up the energy and motivation. I'm wired a bit weirdly that sometimes I need something energetic to shift my productivity into overdrive (very grateful for wfh in that regard)!

Completely agree, I have music on literally all the time (had like 50k minutes on my Spotify Wrapped last year), it's actually the only bit of being in an office I'm a bit worried about as I definitely use music to focus! haha

Thanks, everyone for your replies :) I really appreciate it.
I wanted to clarify firm B is also a firm that I really like! (big reason why I applied its also very different to firm A) but similar to Jacob with TS I'm very inclined to firm A.
I've decided to give myself some time over the next week to think about my reasons/motivation for doing the vacation scheme at firm B, then proceed from there. Obviously, if I accept or I am 100% going to accept the offer from firm A out of courtesy for grad rec at firm B and other candidates it's better I withdraw asap.
Also thank you for the feedback Jessica -I really want to make sure I communicate well and in advance with grad rec at both firms :)

My partner said when he was in the office he literally used to put his earphones in all day (other than meetings and the occasional conversation) to help him concentrate. He's a senior associate in a Tech/IP team so pretty busy. From talking to him I get the impression being at home has given him less chance to listen to music because of constant Teams calls and stuff. Being in an office is probably a bit more casual!

I agree with this, for some reason WFH makes me feel way more trapped and like I should be ready for a call at any given moment!
Yeah I totally get where you're coming from with this.

I'm in a slightly different position - I work in multiple roles, but I'm either self-directing (I do consulting/ commissioned writing work for some financial markets analysts and trading companies) or, like what I do here, it's not the sort of work where I'm really expecting calls in etc so I can stick headphones in and go completely into my own world without worrying! Starting paralegalling in July I'll be WFH at first and then into the office, so will definitely be a series of transitions, but just need to wait and get into my groove at the time as I don't want to end up overthinking and making myself anxious about nothing! haha

I do most TCLA work with headphones on! Music makes a lot of tasks more enjoyable :)

If you're ok with some slightly post-punk rock, I'm massively into Fontaines DC, Viagra Boys and Squid if you know them.

I’d be interested in people’s thoughts on this rebrand (not law)....

    https://www.linkedin.com/posts/stan...n-to-change-activity-6792343935290224640-wNb3

I thought it was a joke/very late April Fools!
Strikes me as utterly needless and probably very expensive... the branding consultant was laughing all the way to the bank with that commission!

Also, nobody in the entire planet refers to Aberdeen as "abrdn", only "abdn" (take it from someone who lives here).
