Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well and had a nice summer, despite the unusual circumstances. My name is Tom and I am a brand ambassador at CMS.

CMS has just opened applications to its 2020/1 programmes.

Follow this link to apply: http://ocply.co/cms2020-ucl-web

Here are some quick facts about these opportunities.

CMS First Steps Programme is open to first-year law and second-year non-law students. During this 1 week programme you will:
  • Have the opportunity to shadow a trainee solicitor
  • Take part in various skills sessions (networking, presentation, commercial awareness)
  • Undergo a variety of case study seminars
CMS Academy is open to second-year law and third-year non-law students. During this 3 week internship you will:
  • Interact with CMS' clients
  • Work with thought leaders in the legal and industry sectors
  • Work towards securing a training contract with CMS
Applications close on January 4th.

If anyone has any questions at all, do not hesitate to get in contact with me through this forum or through my LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/levytom/

Could someone please kindly link me to the thread with the list of firms that do and don't use psychometric testing please. I've been trying to find it but to no avail or if someone could please guide me on the best way to find threads that would also be fab! Thank you in advance.

No dice after my AC. I guess it's another round of applications for me.

Just turned 25, 2 years out of university - I really thought this round was my round. I finally had all my ducks in a row - I'd done a great vac scheme the year before, I'd got a great paralegal job at a great firm. Now I've lost my job due to Covid, had to move back home (EU) as a result and facing another round of applications.

I know I'm still young, but somehow today, after getting the news, I feel older than ever.

Really felt like I'd done a good job on the AC too. I guess it wasn't meant to be.

I’ll be 28 when I start my TC and there’s someone on my intake (at a magic circle firm) in their 50s!

I’m also a paralegal at a (different) magic circle firm and there are lots of trainees in their late twenties. I also work with someone who qualified at 35.

I totally get the worry about being older, but I honestly don’t think there’s such thing as being too old!

Keep going, gather all the feedback you can and come back stronger this application cycle.

I just got a rejection for their first open day, hope it’s because I’m a grade below their A-Level requirement and not from what I wrote :(
Hi Olivia,
Sorry for responding to this but I was also unsuccessful for their first open day! I'm just trying to work out if the email I received was a generic rejection email as mine said that I am encouraged to apply to their other Specialised Open Days - I was wondering if you got the same email?

Yes my email said about the specialised open days too so I would guess it was generic :/

has anyone heard back from Skadden? I applied at the end of July and have had radio silence since then

just a note on this, I applied to Skadden also but earlier in the year I asked their graduate recruitment manager if they do actually consider direct TC apps regardless of them accepting the apps. And the answer was that they don’t look at them unless they don’t fill the places (11/12 places) from their vac scheme. Which they confirmed that they put emphasis on. So I don’t even think they look at them just in case there is a good one, but literally only if they don’t fill the places.

This is very useful, thanks. I think we'll start compiling a list of firms and their position on direct training contract applications. It might lead to candidates reconsidering whether it's worth applying.
