Do law firms generally prefer penultimate year students?
It hasn't been the case for me. Last year I applied for 10 firms and was rejected at application stage on 8 of those. This year I have applied for 7 firms and progressed at 5 (yet to hear back from the other 2).- Andrew M

I think that it really depends on how you frame it. It could be a good way of you showing that you have resilience and/or discussing why diversity is important/matters to you.
