Imo start from scratch even if you're recycling a good bit of content. Context will have changed, your understanding of your experiences and their significance will have evolved, and your application writing will be better. I rewrite everything when reapplying in the same way I'd write fresh...
I agree with the above, and would just add that to the extent that you *do* talk about pro bono, frame it with some specificity - ex. 'I like [X] initiative and the opportunity to make [Y] impact because of [Z] reason.' I would also be careful about the framing of any mention of pro bono...
Generally speaking, at a midmarket firm I'd expect more client contact and opportunities to take on higher-level tasks as a junior, and (again generally) a better work-life balance than firms that work at the top of the market. All of this varies by firm, though.
To answer the more general question, at application stage it's best to calibrate the level of specificity to the firm. If you were applying to a US firm with an intense finance focus then obviously it would be appropriate to go deep on that. Conversely, some MC and other full service firms will...
Don't worry too much about what exposure you've had - most applicants don't have much experience. Your pro bono experience sounds great, for private client I'd really lean in on wanting to do work that has a direct impact on people's lives - just bear in mind that the type of client and the type...
Both is fine. I'd suggest trying to firm up what exactly you're keen on within those areas - commercial law is a very, very broad field and if CRS has any particular practice groups you're interested in then go to that level of detail.
I'm not sure how they run their private client practice...
Some firms questions will explicitly ask for this, in which case yes. If it's not prompted by the question, I'd actually avoid it as then you're not really answering the question at hand in part of your answer.
This said, I would generally tend to select a business story that is relevant to...
A bunch of firms have links to practice WGs on their grad rec pages - can't remember exactly which but off the top of my head I think Clifford Chance, Linklaters, A&O and White & Case(?) should have them
Shearman and Latham I would say no, as they're non-rolling and it hasn't even been 2 weeks since close. Don't know much about Stephenson Harwood so can't comment on that.
Curious what firm this is for? I think it depends how focused the firm's overall practice is - if you were writing for, say, Kirkland, I'd imagine it's fine to go all in on PE, but I wouldn't necessarily do so in an application to Freshfields even though they also take top marks for high-end buyouts
Travers is a cover letter (no word limit) addressed to Germaine VanGeyzel, + additional free-text for 'details of your main extra-curricular activities and leisure interests' & 'details of any positions of responsibility and achievements or awards at school, University or elsewhere'
