When you say you discussed one issue, did you do just one very specific topic in a large amount of depth, or did you talk about one theme, and point out a few things within that theme that were affecting the legal profession?
As someone who is impatient to get a job too, something you should consider is just applying for 2023 TCs and just asking if they will let you start sooner. I was speaking to a recruiter at interview about this recently and apparently it's not uncommon for one or two trainees every cycle to want...
I can one up you on that. When the partner asked me why I didn't apply to any US firms (I'd talked about preferring UK firms in my app form) I told him I didn't want to be owned by a firm and wanted to have the time to have a life!
I was just totally clueless.
As I understand it from my (limited) interactions with Forsters' grad rec team, what they've done is just bring the 2022 cycle forward a year. So everyone who is applying for 2022 contracts will apparently be interviewed alongside and assessed at the same time as those looking for 2023. 2023...
I didn't even apply to any MC firms this year!
Fun fact, though. My first ever law job interview was with Slaughter and May which I got by a total fluke through some open day thing and was totally, totally unprepared for. It was a complete wreck. Been avoiding it ever since!
Feeling truly blessed and humbled to announce to the TCLA community, my dog and anyone on my LinkedIn network who can still stand me that I have received TC offers from all the MC firms!
Just kidding. I got nothing.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who's submitted a monstrous amount of apps! I'm well on the way to my 29th, although I'm taking a break to do the Reed Smith research questions right now.
I'm not usually one for mantras but the way I've dealt with rejection is by remembering that failure is is...
Really? What modules were these for? I am a Bristol law grad and everything I did was rounded up or down to their specified grade boundaries whether or not you wanted it.
I can't even remember if I received an update email or not after passing their online test. But since summer VS ACs are already taking place, I'm now expecting a PFO.
It's not the only crazy one. This was a long time ago now but my older brother also trained as a solicitor and after his TC interviewed for an NQ role with Debevoise & Plimpton. Apparently the partner there described his own firm as a 'cult'.
Oof that is brutal. I was thinking more recently...
Oh yep. I can totally see that happening. I think it's a privilege they also extend to their associates as they are rumoured to do a lot of stealth firing.
These particular firms did not offer vacation schemes tbh. But I do appreciate your point. There is next to no point applying to a US firm for a direct TC if it takes 90% of candidates from the Vac Scheme. Just on the odds alone it is wasted time, as you say.
I never applied but for what it's worth I have an acquaintance who is training there and it is apparently an absolute sweatshop. So it might be positive to view this as a bullet dodged!
I applied for two US firms that do direct TCs this cycle actually. But they aren't mainstream firms and only take 2-4 trainees a year so the chances of success are very very slim.
I'm afraid I don't remember. I think I applied in November and got a response in August. But don't let that dishearten you. I have an acquaintance who is starting her TC there in September who applied in June and was interviewed in July. They do seem to take it quite seriously.
