Morning Jessica,
What is the best way of expressing interest in a particular practice area if you don't have a lot of experience it? I'm applying to a firm that does a lot of financial crime and fraud work (pretty much their only work tbh).
My reasons for being interested are:
that I am...
I believe you, but how come you know? Do you work at one of these firms or with ship owners regularly? Just curious. Seems like very niche knowledge lol.
They only advertise them discreetly on their website AFAIK. I only stumbled upon it by accident while reading an FT article which quoted someone who practices there!
I've never done a vacation scheme before but I have done six open days, legal work experience in house, some more in a law firm in another country, a commercial mini pupillage and worked at a law clinic for the past two years. So although I haven't, I think my background experience has given me...
For me, its been a very painful process as I had interviews at a handful of exceedingly good firms last time and it is already my third cycle. I feel like my prospects are shrinking every year! But I'm going to keep on pushing as I think once you've produced the best app you can, the quality of...
Yes. At least that is how it was for me. Another point you should note, which I think depends on the interviewer, but I know threw me off (and ultimately led me to crash and burn) after my direct TC AC with them over last summer was the fact that the competency questions were asked in a way that...
There have been a huge number of applications compared to last year's cycle I believe. I've made 29 apps and only had one interview and 10 rejections (and a few others I'm pretty sure are rejections but I haven't heard back from yet). It's been very hard to stand out at all.
But the other...
This is true, but they can be separate too. I just mention it separately because it's something that is (admittedly only briefly) dealt with as a separate form of funding arrangement on the DR module I'm currently doing on the LPC!
It's the beginning of a new week chaps. Good luck with all the apps and here's to us all getting some kind of positive response from the firms we have left. This has been a very difficult cycle for many of us, but the important thing is to keep your eye on the prize! It will all lead somewhere...
Damages-based agreements are also something that can sometimes occur, but typically they are used by firms that do a lot of high-value PI (e.g. spinal injury) or product liability work.
I think this cycle has arguably been more competitive for everyone tbh. But it could depend on the firm - some don't like you to reapply after interview. I know that over the summer I was gutted to learn after my (failed) direct TC interview with Macfarlanes that they would not allow me to...
