    Call for commercial awareness topics!

Hi Jake, thanks for the reply. I agree that it is more of a political issue, although I am sure that projects departments across the city are taking note. It is the political football it has become which leads me to think some firms may feel its too hot to handle, rather than previously where...

    Call for commercial awareness topics!

Hi Jake, had you had any thoughts on the decision of HMG to grant new oil licences in the North Sea? Personally I feel that campaign groups will try and find a way to challenge the grant of the licences, particularly with regards to any impact assessments (downstream affects of projects could...

Mini Series: Business of Law Firms - Allen & Overy to merge with Shearman & Sterling

I think it’s bad news for Shearman’s London office I’m afraid. They are smaller teams paid more to do the same work that A&O does. Many lawyers at Shearman have already jumped. Potentially the same applies to A&O in NY, I doubt they would add anything to the much bigger and more regarded...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2022-23

I wouldn’t read too much into it- my firm kept pushing back when I would hear but I got an offer in the end. Will vary from firm to firm and could be for any number of reasons

Does the SQE have to be passed before commencing a Training Contract?

The answer to the first question is yes, firms require you to have passed the SQE before starting. Must firms will pay SQE fees + prep course + maintenance grant, especially bigger city firms. Some smaller firms don’t so it’s always best to check if you aren’t sure. I think having the SQE will...

Sqe at BPP - Finish date

I’m doing the course this September and start my TC the September afterwards, so in the same boat. It’s annoying but hopefully it will ease off in the last few weeks

When Law Firms say they have a sector-focus strategy, what does that really mean?

Indeed while firms are organised around sectors- see shipping firms such as WFW and HFW.

When Law Firms say they have a sector-focus strategy, what does that really mean?

There are a few ways- 1. For smaller law firms lawyers may have a broader practice but focused on one industry. For example instead of doing purely M&A work they could do more ‘corporate’ work but in a specific sector. 2. In larger law firms teams can be further sub divided by industry. See...

Does anyone know of any good comparisons between ULaw and BPP for the SQE LLM?

Should I delay TC applications until after 3rd year because of poor 2nd year grades?

I hope they keep you on too! The higher the grade you can get the more it will help, so even if you can’t get a first aim to get as high of a 2:1 as you can. Good luck with it

Should I delay TC applications until after 3rd year because of poor 2nd year grades?

Sorry I have got my years confused- I would apply to some firms in the vac scheme cycle if you have time (perhaps vac scheme only firms) but focus mainly on grades and then apply potentially to directs over the summer once you have got your final grades

Should I delay TC applications until after 3rd year because of poor 2nd year grades?

I would say that if you can improve your grades and also do some applications then doing these may help- even if I just turns out to be good practice for applying again in third year. But focusing on good grades is the most important

If you have not done a masters already then you would be able to claim the masters loan if you do the llm (about 11k)

    Competitors

White & Case immediately springs to mind, alongside other major US players- Latham, etc. I think Freshfields also has a strong APAC presence. Another way at looking at competitors is who is competing for the same work- for HSF this may not be the same on the corporate side as the litigation...
