Recommendation of SQE1 Test Centres in London

Did SQE at the large centre at Shadwell- Tobacco docks. Was all SQE, the large nature means it was well run and you could meet some new people (and easy to get to) rather than sharing a driving theory centre with people doing 40 minute tests!

TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2024-5

Paralegals are generally hired quickly and cheaply, by only taking those with TCs they outsource the quality check part of the recruitment process and can hire on FTCs / for a defined length of time without upsetting either party. Not saying I agree with it, but you can understand why they do it

    Skadden cancelling their TC ?

I believe it started in the LegalCheek comments here: https://www.legalcheek.com/2024/07/exclusive-dla-piper-raises-london-newly-qualified-lawyer-pay-to-110k/ Pretty sure there is no substance to it, a rather weird rumour.

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2023-24

It is the same material but the classes are split online and in person, so online everyone would be online if that makes sense. It would be say breakout rooms on teams rather than discussing stuff at a table

I doubt hybrid would be an option. The course is 3 days a week for 5 classes, they tried to make it 3 consecutive days. I liked going in and meeting people, but it would depend on who you get in your class. We had some online classes as replacements and the interactive elements worked better in...

LLM SQE1 or the SQE prep courses?

Its definitely a lot of work for the SQE 1 course, sounds like you would be better on the longer course

LLM SQE1 or the SQE prep courses?

I would just do an SQE prep course then. If you have a law degree recently and you can study full time 10 weeks is probably enough but it will be rough. If you could do 20 weeks the learning would be easier but you need to look at how the dates work out, particularly given how long results for...

LLM SQE1 or the SQE prep courses?

I imagine your firm will specify what they want you to do if they are funding it / giving you a maintenance grant

    training contract internatioanl students

A good way to get an insight is to look at profiles of associates on the websites (most people don’t list trainees). It will often detail where they went to university and if they trained at the firm.

Please don't pay for work, these are money making schemes and not really designed to benefit their participants

Vacation scheme application - Writing about a case

Recent cases are better. The news/ articles section of the website is the best place to start, but legal500/ Chambers will have a list of notable cases / deals that the firm chooses to highlight, although some of these can be older. The most important part is to explain WHY you found it...

    Spontaneous TC Journey

Really sorry to hear this, have been following your journey for a while. Although it hurts now, you will be able to take this experience and draw on it in the future. A vac scheme is good experience that you will be able to draw on in future applications. I also encourage you to seek out...

    Preparing for the SQE

You don’t have much time to learn the underlying law- although the materials we were given were quite helpful. It might be useful to get these off someone currently doing the course to look at over summer

How to answer 'why this firm' when there's no information available about their cases?

Have you tried reaching out to grad rec/ trainees at the firm on LinkedIn? This is how I got insight on firms difficult to research. The firm will be aware this is the case and happy to help in my experience

It’s unlikely as a junior you would be advising a client directly. I imagine that different firms would have different policies over what is signed off in what way.
