TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

Open question, completely unrelated to law...: Does anyone have recommendations for new tunes to listen to? I've kinda played all my current playlists to death... put it this way, if they were vinyl they'd be worn through! Got quite varied taste, listen to a lot of Gerry Cinnamon/ Sam Fischer/...

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

Again, I'm talking in general terms here as opposed to specifics - I can't speak for every firm - but these will probably be approximate numbers, usually either based off the quoted number from the firm (which will be a general number which they give for general indications) or an average of...

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

I get where you're coming from with this - you make a very interesting point. I can also definitely see why someone might square it with themselves by looking at it through this lens. I'd say the argument slightly trips up when you consider that what you describe will not be 100% accurate for...

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

Hi :) When I was in this position, I just asked Travers to extent my TC offer time. Basically said "I'm pretty sure I want Travers but I've worked super hard to get onto the other scheme and I feel I owe it to myself to take part on that basis" - I basically just tried to be super honest and...

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

Yeah I can agree on this front. I left school 6 months early after getting Uni offers as I wanted to pick up a job to save for beer money additional expenses living away from home. Worked in the warehouse of my dad's company - really enjoyed the work but 100% felt that I had to 'prove myself'...

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

Try and give yourself a wide variety of experiences. If that were me, I would probably take DR, Corp and Employment as you've got a litigious seat, a transactional seat and a more advisory seat.

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

It's never something I have massively thought about, but my feeling is that most senior fee earners will stay out of that side of things unless they're also recruitment partners. I dare say if a significant portion of the partnership board shared significant concerns about it, they coukd...

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

It's not a PFO until it's a PFO. If they gave you a timeliness for when you could expect to hear back, and it's more than a week or so past that, I would follow up. Similarly, if they didn't give you a deadline, I think enough time has gone past that emailing them would be reasonable.

    Facebook Profile Conundrum

Just took your advice and googled myself, Jess... apparently I'm a rather talented reggae artist!

    Facebook Profile Conundrum

This is a really interesting issue - I think it's likely to result in a whole manner of opinions. @Jessica Booker would possibly be well-placed to advise from a grad rec perspective. My opinion is, from a grad rec perspective, you'll not have a problem. They have much, much better things to do...

    2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

I mean, I can't help but admire the interviewer's honesty... Regardless of what happens, you've clearly done exceptionally well to secure the VS and, as long as you feel like you gave it your all, you've done everything you can and just need to play the waiting game now. Fingers are crossed...

    Colin v Cuthbert: Copycat-erpillar?

Unfortunately, there are hundreds of examples of similar instances in all walks of life. Even in my own hobbies, I can think of several. I know people who have had original tattoos done, for example, where the tattoo artist has drawn it up originally for them etc... only for someone else to...

2020-21 Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion

Hate to sound like a stuck record... but I think that actually makes planning all the more important! If it were me here, I would write out a big table/ list/ mindmap (whatever works for you) with all the elements to all the questions and all the different things you could write about for each...

2020-21 Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion

If I were you, before answering it, look through all the questions/ requirements and plan your answers for each. If it's the first question, that suggests it is more substantive than just "mopping up", so I think planning all the answers will be important.

This is really an additional space for you to discuss things which you feel are relevant and strengthen your application but which you have not mentioned elsewhere.

    Colin v Cuthbert: Copycat-erpillar?

I've got to be totally honest and say that I've actually lost a huge amount of respect for Aldi throughout this dispute, so much so that I really would think twice before shopping there again in the future. I think the way they've handled it, while evidently being a PR success, is actually quite...

    2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

Brilliant achievement - absolutely delighted for you. It's an absolute joy to see members like yourself seeing a tangible, statistical improvement in your performance across app cycles and the fact that you can attribute that in part to TCLA is honestly so fulfilling!! Hope you get to...

    Colin v Cuthbert: Copycat-erpillar?

See my above comment :) It's hard to give a general rule as it varies wildly from case to case and by area of law, but, if a party's conduct aggravated the damages caused by the initial course of action or omission giving rise to the claim, then there is no reason that the claim value could...

    Colin v Cuthbert: Copycat-erpillar?

I was actually having this exact discussion with my fiancee the other night. She's a bit of an copyright/ IP nerd and was saying more or less the same as you: it could be perceived extremely badly by a court and, while this will obviously not affect whether they are considered to have breached...
