TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2022-23

I remember being in a very similar situation last year. I had 4 ACs over two weeks alongside a full time job, a part time job and the LPC. This was also during the two week LPC assessment period! The reality is you do as much as you can -prioritise what really needs doing and everything else...

Definitely not the case at all! LinkedIn is full of people having 7 TC offers in second year, but I was 28 before I got VS and subsequent TC offers. I graduated at 24. It’ll happen when it happens and the average trainee age is older than 22 anyway!

How long is a piece of string. Everyone has very different circumstances that dictate how many well researched apps they can do. Are you just a full time student - if so you have more spare time than most. Do you work alongside studying that’ll limit your time. Do you have health issues. Caring...

Varied depending on the question - some answers were longer than others. I guess it is probably more what you say than the word count 500 words might be really concise for an answer with a lot of information but could equally be complete waffle if in that 500 words you’ve only said 1 or 2...

It was the same last cycle with no word count and difficulty navigating the form. I think last year I put like 1 character answer just to move through the form to then copy and paste the q’s to word to work on my answers then started the form again when I was ready to submit.

Not quite. Everyone will be paid in £ but this this will be converted from the $. So in a cravath paying firm in london example an NQ will be paid $215k but this will be converted to £ in some way, often the reviewed rate it’s rarely freely attached to the market exchange rate - anyone that has...

Depends on the firm and the pay structure. Those that do fix at an exchange rate for a period of time that is then reviewed every 3/6 months. But it is why a few US firms have seen an increase in salaries. Especially those that pay cravath scale in london - but again not all do.

I can do one better than not converting and then securing at another firm. I know someone who didn’t convert a VS one year then the next cycle got a direct TC from the same firm. Not converting happens. Getting a VS isn’t a guarantee of a TC in the same way that not converting doesn’t meant...

If you are waiting to literally start the role before you hit submit I'm not sure how this can improve your application, with any new role it takes a few weeks to actually get started and be able to articulate what it is you do and put how that is helpful on an application. I would put it in...

Do all 9 roles need to be in your CV or need a description. 3/4 sentences for 9 roles is still 27-36 sentences which is quite a lot of text. 100 words per role is 900 words which is likely to be more than a page in length just on that section.

Are you sure most don’t have compulsory seat in corporate? I’m aware of quite a few firms that make trainees do at least one corporate seat, especially the big corporate/commercial firms as that’s where they make the majority of their money!

I’m 28 and did two vac schemes this summer which resulted in two offer and I have 3 years paralegal experience. These firms only hire via vac scheme, so many do. Even those that hire direct often hire majority from vac scheme…

    LPC or SQE?

I have heard of assessors not showing up for skills assessments then telling students they have to apply for a concession and resit months later, not giving students access to online exams and again making them resit months later and questions not matching across papers, and examining them on...

    LPC or SQE?

Had to laugh at the last comment ‘institutions that know what they are doing’. The two biggest providers, ULaw and BPP, are renowned for exam mistakes and poor admin etc.

Do you know if others have heard back? As you got in touch with them on Monday and haven’t heard back I would wait until next Monday to reach out again unless you have a specific deadline you need to hear the outcome by due to, for example, competing offers.

Yes. My first paralegal role required the LPC and previous experience - I will caveat I had transferable skills from my uni job and a 3 month paid legal internship but no LPC.

I did two VSs this summer and secured a TC from one and I’m still waiting for the outcome from the other and I am 28! There are others on the forum who have failed one year and applied to the same firm again and been successful. Some firms won’t reinterview but there are plenty of others firms...

Now that I have had a couple of days to let it sink in I can say that I have (finally) received a TC offer from one of the VSs I undertook this summer. So even if the other firm says no when I hear the outcome I still never have to do another TC application again! Thanks to @Jaysen @Jessica...

the GDL wont be a waste, most law firms are asking that non-law graduate do the PGDL prior to the SQE. I wouldn't self-fund the LPC, as someone that has just finished the LPC I am being told by some firms I would have to SQE2, I only did the LPC as I did it part time starting last year prior to...

This is a tough decision. Do you have a gut feeling? I’m a big believe in gut instinct - it has always worked out well for me. Alternatively flip a coin - when it’s in the air you will know which way you want it to land and that says a lot! From a personal point of view - I would choose...
