I have recently received a job offer and have been given 5 days to respond. However, I have an assessment centre for a graduate scheme on Monday and I will know the outcome the week after. Essentially, I have one job offer and one potential offer if I do well in the AC. The latter pays far better but is of course not guaranteed. I really need a job as I will be moving to London and can't survive in the City without one! Any advice on what to do would be appreciated!
Accept then renege if you get the latter offer

Have you received the contract from the organisation who have given you the offer?

I would take it as five days from the point of receiving the offer, which would take you through to early next week anyway.
I will have only had the assessment centre by next Monday so will have no choice but to sign the first contract and then potentially pull out if I am successful on the assessment centre. Is this unheard of? I understand I'd be burning bridges with the former company but would be happy to do so for the graduate scheme....

Not unheard of - something a small percentage of applicants do each year. Renege rates are at around 8% for some law firms.

Is the best way to go about reneging an offer just doing so via email, explaining the situation, apologizing for the inconvenience, etc.? Or will this not suffice given I will have already signed the employment contract?

@Jessica Booker as a final year student graduating in a couple of months, is it too early to be applying to open paralegal positions that are currently being advertised if we cannot start till around July? There is there is no advertised start date on the opening
