I used to find that tough too. The way I used to approach it was to choose a handful of similar firms that I'd also applied to. That way if they asked why, I could justify my reasons.
This was in the US, but a firm once asked me if I've ever bent the rules to get something I wanted. I paused for ages, I wasn't sure what they wanted me to say!
I did a banking internship last summer. In an AC this year they really grilled me on my motivation to do commercial law. Questions like 'don't you think a banker has a more central role in a deal?' and 'why would you want to sit on the side' etc. I came so close to agreeing with them haha
