Are Autumn TC applications specifically for final year students or is it possible to apply as a penultimate year student?

CMS also state this so may be worth sharing as I assume this means that direct TCs are not common. :The main route to apply for a training contract at CMS is through successfully completing the CMS Academy. (Vac scheme) Deadline is 4/01/2019

And Davis Polk say this

• 2019 vacation scheme applications will be accepted from penultimate-year law students, final-year non-law students and postgraduates wishing to commence a training contract in 2021.
• Applications open on December 1, 2018, and close on January 13, 2019. We will conduct interviews in the second half of January 2019 and expect to offer a total of 20 places for our two vacation schemes each of two-week duration.
• 2021 trainee solicitors will be recruited from the 2019 vacation scheme participants. We currently expect to offer around four places for our 2021 intake. I assume this means no direct TC applications?

Hey Sophie! I would say it really depends on your level of commercial law experience.

Yep that's what it sounds like. I'm not sure if that's new? I also didn't realise Davis Polk had such a small intake.

Simmons & Simmons also recruit almost exclusively from vac schemes. This was confirmed by graduate recruitment and trainees when I spoke to them at various events.

Would say it’s equal, but going for a straight TC instead of a VS as a route to a TC shouldn’t put you in any disadvantage.

On that note, I am going to draw a list of firms that interview after the 31st of July and post it shortly

On the top of my head:

1. White & Case - only reviews TC apps after the 31st July deadline (confirmed on GR website/chambers student/open day)
2. Paul Hastings - only reviews TC apps after the 31st July deadline (confirmed on GR website)
3. O'Melveny & Myers - only reviews TC apps after the 31st July deadline (confirmed on GR website)

Hi all

I would like to ask your opinion re training contract applications timings. Some say get all your applications in before Christmas... but then you hear stories of people securing a TC having applied two days before the deadline. What are your views/experiences?

P.S.: I am referring to the 31 July deadlines.

My uni careers service told me that lots of firms have reported a high volume of students submitting their application on the VERY last day. Would not recommend that and I believe you'd be unsuccessful with most rolling apps if you did the same BUT if you apply a few weeks before a deadline it's possible there are still spaces available!
