Talking about international deals

Hi

I was just wondering when talking of interesting deals carried out by a firm on an application, whether we should stick to work carried out primarily by the London office or whether we could mention particularly interesting or groundbreaking deals even if the London office had little to no involvement.

I'm just wary of mentioning a firm's involvement in a specific deal as something that attracts me to it when they could turn around and say London was not involved.

I really appreciate any help with this.

Where do you find/read the ‘interesting deals’ carried out by certain firms? If they’re found on the firms website, Chambers Student or the Legal 500 it’s pretty much legit so I don’t think you should worry. However, if you’re not confident about being asked follow up questions relating to the international deal in an interview, I would just cut it out completely.

From your post, I assume that when you said ‘they could turn around and say London was not involved’, you’re talking about a potential interview/AC?. If so, 99.9% of the time I really doubt those who are interviewing you know of every single deal the firm has been involved in tbh, but that is just my point of view. However, they could ask you hypothetical questions relating to the deal, for example - as a trainee, what tasks would you be completing?

I hope that helps!

When talking about a deal, the point you're trying to make - presumably - is that you have an interest in the type of deals the firm does, as an answer to a "why this firm?" question. That should still stand even if you mention a deal where the London office wasn't involved.

    This is true.

Even if they are aware of the deal, it is unlikely a firm will question why you are choosing a deal with a lack of London involvement. And on the off chance they do, you can explain that there are other reasons you are interested in the firm.

Sorry to revisit an old thread, but on the subject of this, would it be possible to mention a deal the firm did last year? Or is that too far back?

    Thanks.
