Hi @Amma Usman, what do you think of this draft for the application to Paul Weiss open day "The open day will expose me to my favourite practice areas specifically M&A. My interest in this area stems from attending several webinars specifically the White & Case M&A, webinar, which was an eye-opener that introduced me to the intricacies of deal structuring and navigating regulatory landscapes in cross-border transactions. This led me to read Gibson Dunn's report on international trade considerations, where I gained insight into how factors like deal timing, valuation, and post-closing operations impact complex transactions. One deal that caught my attention is Paul Weiss' representation of Frontier in its acquisition by Verizon. This transaction exemplifies the challenges I have explored in my research, such as navigating shareholder approval, potential regulatory scrutiny, and structuring a deal to avoid a hostile takeover. By attending the Paul Weiss open day, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how the firm addresses these multifaceted legal and strategic hurdles and to see firsthand how its corporate team works to achieve successful client outcomes."

Hey @tosin4774 ,

Your draft is impressive, and I like how you’ve linked your interest in M&A to specific experiences and research. I have a few suggestions that might make your application even stronger:

1. Avoid overly flowery language: For example, replacing “favourite” with a term like “key” or “preferred” would keep the tone more formal. Similarly, “eye-opener” could be rephrased to something like “broadened my understanding” or “provided valuable insights.”

2. Focus on what you hope to gain from the open day: While the webinars you’ve attended are a great foundation, I suggest briefly mentioning how the White & Case webinar introduced you to M&A. Then pivot to emphasise what you aim to learn from Paul Weiss specifically—perhaps by framing it around a knowledge gap you hope to fill or a pressing question you’d like to explore. For example, you could mention wanting to understand how value creation differs in public and private markets from a practical perspective.

3. Deepen your analysis of the deal: The Frontier acquisition by Verizon is a great choice, but the reasoning you’ve provided—regulatory scrutiny, shareholder approval, and hostile takeover considerations—might come across as generic. To strengthen this, highlight what stood out about Paul Weiss’ role in the deal. For instance, did their approach to structuring the transaction or managing a specific challenge appeal to you?

4. Highlight the open day’s unique components:
If Paul Weiss has disclosed any details about the day—such as case studies or presentations by lawyers—consider referencing those and explaining why they excite you. This will show that you’ve researched the firm and the event thoroughly.

Overall, you’ve done a fantastic job linking your interest in M&A to the firm. I feel like with a few adjustments, your application will clearly demonstrate why you’re an excellent fit for the open day and how it aligns with your career aspirations.

Best of luck!!!

Thank you so much. Also, I missed the deadline for the TCLA scholarship programme. Do you know when the next application period is @Amma Usman?
This won’t be until next Autumn now as we only run it once a year where the programme is a number of months long.
