I'm currently writing my application form for the Mishcon de Reya vacation scheme and would really appreciate some guidance on this question if anyone has any tips:

If we were to invite you to interview, what issue would you most like to talk about and why? This can be a non-legal issue and should be something you genuinely feel passionate about. (300 words max) *

As a non-law graduate, I am going to talk about a non-legal issue. Some ideas I have had so far have included the issue of schools shutting down in the UK and also the influence of social media on the public's perception of success.

I am not sure whether to include stats from news sites/references and make it an argumentative piece or whether it should be solely my opinion?

Thanks!!

I do not think either is necessarily right or wrong, but generally I would expect depth of analysis to desirable. As such, if there are further statistics or other relevant points you have read, I do not see why you would not include them. While the issue to be discussed has to be one of personal interest, it does not have to be based only on your personal life and can use external sources.

However, unless the data you will reference is particularly surprising or difficult to find, I would not make it a point to cite the sources. The general practice when writing on commercial topics for instance is not to reference sources, and if you do so for this question your answer might look a bit too much like a university essay.
