LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) at ULaw

Could someone currently studying the LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2 and SQE Plus) please let me know what the weekly course demands are? i.e. how many lectures per week, how many days are these lectures spread across, weekly hours etc. I'd also be interested to know course end dates, I am due to start in September but I cannot find any exact course dates on the ULaw website.

The course structure depends on which provider you go with. Contact the university for course dates if you cannot find it. I'm currently with ULaw and my course structure is as follows (NB: Seminar days and times will vary depending on which group of class you have been assigned to):

1. SQE 1
   1. No lectures.
   2. Ethics were fully covered in two 2-hour back-to-back seminars in the first week.
   3. Roughly one 2-hour seminars for each subject per week (BLP, Criminal Practice, Property Practice, Wills, and Dispute Resolution).
      1. For example:
         1. Monday: BLP and Dispute Resolution
         2. Thursday: Criminal and Property Practice
         3. Friday: Wills
      2. Total weekly seminar hours were at least 10 hours.
         1. Bear in mind, you have to complete the prep work before each seminar, and consolidation work after each seminar (including the weekly practice quiz for each subject).
         2. How long prep and consolidation will take depends on how quickly you can effectively work through the tasks.
      3. Solicitors' Account were covered roughly once every two to three weeks.
   4. Black letter law subjects were self-studies (Contract, Tort, Legal Systems, Constitutional, Land, Trusts).
      1. For each course, each week, the module information will state which subject and chapters to revise.
2. SQE 2
   1. No lectures.
   2. Roughly one 1.5-hour seminars for each subject per week (CMA, Writing, Drafting, Research, Advocacy, Interviewing).
      1. For example:
         1. Monday: Interviewing and Research
         2. Thursday: Advocacy and CMA
         3. Friday: Drafting and Writing
      2. Total weekly seminar hours were 9 hours.
         1. Bear in mind, you have to complete the prep work before each seminar, and consolidation work after each seminar.
         2. How long prep and consolidation will take depends on how quickly you can effectively work through the tasks.
   3. FLK and black letter law subjects were self-guided revision.
      1. For each course, each week, the module information will state what to revise.

I am unable to provide you any timetable information for SQE Plus as I have not yet started, but I imagine it will vary significantly depending on the elective modules you have chosen.

Hi, I know this is a month old but could anyone tell me approximately how many hours of independent study you have to do per week on top of the seminar hours? Of course this varies for everyone, but even an estimate would be helpful, eg is it closer to 10 hours or 30 hours? Thanks!

The learning for SQE1 is predominantly from the prep and consolidation reading for class and this definitely takes its toll as it is a lot of content, especially as ULaw books are very detailed. Honestly 30-40 hours is probably accurate. Definitely try and be smart with your reading, don't try and basically re-type out the textbook like I did or you'll fall behind very quickly haha

I don't have the exact timetable, but I can give you an idea of what to expect. For SQE1, you'll have 8 taught subjects with about 1 x 2hr class per week for each main subject. Ethics is covered on day 1, and Solicitor's Accounts & Legal Services are covered every 2 weeks or so towards the end of term. Hope that helps!

I just realised today that ULaw miss out 7 of the topics covered in the SQE (contract, tort etc) - does anyone have advice on how you studied for these modules?

How should I prepare for BLL subjects? I've done undergrad law couple years ago so I'm not confident I can remember everything. Especially if my modules didn't cover all of the sqe specifications - ex. Not much focus on unregistered land during my 1st year land law modules

I'm using study/revision guide to revise some subjects before the course starts but would relying on revision books or materials given by ULaw (I heard they will provide some materials on bll?) be enough?

Hi everyone,

I recently graduated with a 2:1 from a Russell Group university and am now preparing to self-fund my SQE preparation. I’m an international student on a graduate visa and have been accepted into the University of Law's LLM (SQE 1 & 2) Online programme, which starts this September.

However, I'm currently debating whether to pursue the LLM or opt for the University of Law's SQE 1 & 2 Preparation course offered in-person.

Given that I’m not currently working, do you think the online format would be a disadvantage for me? Would enrolling in the LLM program offer significant benefits in terms of knowledge and employability, or would the preparation course be more practical?
As far as I understand it, LLM is better for those who would like to access student loan funding, but I am not eligible for it and it's not relevant to me.
I would appreciate any insights, experiences, or advice you have on which path might be more beneficial in the long term. Thank you
