    I think there's general a difference between background checks and reference checks. the company will contact all your past employers, at least recent/ relevant ones, to make sure you actually worked there at the time you did, and then separately may contact an academic referee and an employer...

    Depends on the firm. Some firms have told me bullet points and others have told me prose. But for example, I did prose for Skadden even though someone said they prefer prose and still got to WE, so I think if you're strong you're ok either way.
