    2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

I would really just advise the same as Jess has here - just be honest. I've increasingly come round to the idea that firms aren't actually trying to trip you up with interview questions like these - i.e., they're not asking a loaded question. Often it will genuinely just be to pick up...

    2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

Hey, In all honesty this is an absolute horror question for an interview - I'd never have been able to answer it on the spot. Hell, we're applying to be commercial solicitors, not economists. I would tend to echo the above here and say, within reason, that they're more interested in your...

    2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

I would typically speak for about 4 minutes for each of the 3 why's, but there's no particular right or wrong. The key thing is the content in your answer, not how long your answer is.

    AC written exercises

Hi, Below is an extract from my article on case studies, but it is applicable to all forms of written assessment. Hope this helps as a starting point! Structuring your response for a written assessment Although preparing a letter for a client, or emailing a partner, might seem starkly...

A SPAC-tacular Change in UK Listing Rules

Yeah I agree completely. I think we're seeing replications of the dot-com bubble in SPACs and also crypto-asset valuations at the moment - only a matter of time before the bubble pops and only really the biggest names survive it. It will be very interesting to see whether the stock market is...

    British American Tobacco Video Interview

Hi, I've not done an interview with BAT specifically, but I think there are certain key areas to cover in your prep that you should be prepared to answer on/ things that I would probably try and push you on if I were interviewing you. In re your prep, I would take a deep dive on BAT as a...

Hey, Congrats on the interview! All my advice for Travers would be contained in my interviews article which you can access via the link in my signature. You might also want to look at the Travers 2020-21 Interview Experiences. In my experience of the interview (in-person), it was pretty...

I had a TC offer from a partner's mobile once - there's a bit of a story goes alongside it, can see it here if you want a laugh.

    2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

100+ hour-weeks are horrific and not sustainable for any prolonged period of time. April & May last year, I was working 100-105 hours a week for about a month or so (just the way things worked out, unavoidable unfortunately) sleeping 3-4 hours a night most nights and it burned me out massively...

Definitive Guide to Law Firm Interviews! *Monday Article Series*

Glad you've found things helpful thus far :) At my NRF AC there was also a written case study and an assessed negotiation, so you may wish to check out my articles on those if you haven't already. Unless anything is particularly confidential (I don't think that would be an issue on a...

Definitive Guide to Law Firm Interviews! *Monday Article Series*

So I think there are a few points to address here: - the suggested styles are only suggestions as a starting point and will not comprehensively cover every single possible way of answering a commercial questions - candidates will need to modify/ adapt them to suit whatever you're prepping for...

Help buying/choosing professional clothing (especially for women)

Just in regards the above, for anyone who isn't familiar with it, SmartWorks is a great resource for those who need a formal interview outfit/ outfits for vacation schemes but who aren't able to afford it themselves - you're given access to free outfits which are yours to own and keep. It's only...

Definitive Guide to Law Firm Interviews! *Monday Article Series*

I mean that the example answer for A is good, as is the example for style B. In terms of a new office, I would focus on the industries that NRF specialise in and then look at areas of the world, perhaps emerging markets, where this industry is growing rapidly but where NRF don't currently have...

Help buying/choosing professional clothing (especially for women)

Completely agree! I should've made this clearer in my preceding comments: you do not need to buy expensive stuff and you will not be judged if your outfit is not 'expensive enough'. I did my Travers Smith interview in a <£50 ASOS suit and shoes that cost about £40 that I got in the Clarks sale...

Church's are also a shout here - Oxfords start at about £410, I'm swithering between buying a pair of them vs another pair of trainers at the moment! Edit: my heart says trainers, head says Oxfords

Jess you should look at shopping from designer outlets like Cheshire Oaks and Bicester Village - can get cracking discounts (40/50/60%) and Bicester especially has loads of top-end brands. We're planning a weekend down there as soon as we can travel!

It's not something I'd personally look to bring up at interview, but it's something I'd want to know about in advance of accepting any sort of offer there :)
