I was hoping to start a thread on which firms recruit from their VS or TC, as I am trying to figure out if it is worth it for me to apply to some direct TCs

If there is already a comprehensive thread detailing this then please let me know! And also if any of the info is incorrect, then also please let me know!

Firms that recruit solely from VS:
Akin Gump (but sometimes look at direct TC apps)
    Clyde & Co
    CMS
    Davis Polk & Wardwell
    Dechert
    Gateley
    Gowling WLG
    Herbert Smith Freehills
    Jones Day
Kirkland and Ellis (but sometimes look at direct TC apps)
    Milbank
    Mischon de Reya
    Ropes & Gray
    Shearman & Sterling
    Taylor Wessing
Vinson & Elkins (but sometimes look at direct TC apps)

    Predominantly from VS:
    Addleshaw Goddard
    Baker Mckenzie
    Bird and Bird
    Debevoise & Plimpton
    Dentons
    Eversheds Sutherland
    Gibson Dunn & Crutcher
    HFW
    Linklaters
    Mayer Brown
    Memery Crystal
    Mills & Reeve
    Pinsent Masons
    Simmons & Simmons
    Skadden
    Squire Patton Boggs

    Significant recruitment not from VS:
    Allen & Overy
Bristows (do not have a VS)
    Clifford Chance
    Freshfields
Fried Frank (do not have a VS)
Lewis Silkin (do not have a VS)
    Macfarlanes (50:50)
    Morgan Lewis
    Norton Rose Fullbright
Paul Hastings (do not have a VS)
    Shoosmiths
    Slaughter and May

My approach to work this out would be as follows

Work out how many vac scheme places there are

    Take 80% of that figure

Take 80% of that figure again

Calculates roughly how many TC places are taken by vac schemers (rough estimate).

Take that figure and put in in as a ratio compared to total training contract vacancies - eg:

    (vac scheme vacancies x 80%) x 80% : training contract vacancies

If that figure is anything from 3:4 or lower you still have a good chance of a direct TC in my opinion.

Ahh ok - this is quite helpful! Thanks, Jessica!

I still thought that it might perhaps be helpful to have somewhat of an updated list :)

I think there is a real blurring of the lines between solely/predominantly. For example, firms like Kirkland will accept Direct TC applications but only look at them if they fail to fill their TC's from their VS candidates.
Ahh I see - I'll put Kirkland down in solely but say that sometimes they look at the direct TC apps

I believe CMS also only reruit from their academy (VS)

Linklaters generally offers 80-85% of its TCs to vac schemers.

As has been extensively discussed on this forum for the last fortnight or so, Clifford Chance accepts direct TC apps, but heavily prioritize penultimate year law students and non-law finalists. They've scrapped vac schemes for next year.

This is likely the same for most US firms who have a smaller intake - Akin, V&E, Skadden, DP, etc...

I believe CMS also only reruit from their academy (VS)

Vinson and Elkins almost 100% recruit through VS, so do Milbank

Thanks so much everyone! I've added it all in - but please let me know if I missed anything!

You should probably make a note that Clifford Chance no longer have a vac scheme.
Just to add from my notes of firms that recruit from VS/TC.

Predominantly from VS (but not solely)
    Memery Crystal
    HFW
    Dechert
    Squire Patton Boggs
    Bird and Bird
    Baker McKenzie

For TC (that I have down as worth applying to)
    Morgan Lewis
    Norton Rose Fullbright
    Allen & Overy
    Freshfields

This is just from my research though and is by no means absolute/completely correct!

Fairly sure A&O is another one that predominantly recruits from VS, a bit like Links & other MC firms

According to chambers they have 50 vac scheme places and around 85 training contracts. Using a rough measure that means 40-50% of spaces are for TC applicants (if this information is correct of course!).

Yeah that was true for this year but CC have decided to no longer run a vac scheme and recruit mainly through the spark scheme or direct TCs. They only decided this fairly recently after their virtual vacation schemes
