If I was talking about a firm's work in a ground-breaking deal that impressed me, would it be inappropriate for that deal to have happened a long time ago i.e. in 2012?
I feel this is too long ago in all honesty. I would aim for something that has happened in at least the last 3-4 years if you can. There are likely to be comparative matters you could highlight instead that would show similar qualities/factors as what has attracted you to that particular deal from 2012.

Do you think it would be okay if I mentioned the 2012 work being very influential in helping them build a reputation with a client, which they have advised many times more recently?

I don’t think the deal is something to focus on in that case, you could just focus on the relationship with the client/variety of work they bring in.

does anyone know if the eversheds summer vac scheme is open to final year students or not?
Looks like non-law final year students only. Odd that you can be a graduate though (and so final year law students would be exempt), so you may want to check with them.

So Skadden has changed their application process this year and there is a question “If you could choose a career other than law, what would you choose?”

@Jessica Booker How would you suggest I approach this question? What do they want to see?
I suspect they are looking for you to identify what it is about the other career that would attract you and find the similarities between that career and a legal career. It would help them understand what it is about a legal career is likely to be your motivators.

Understand lawyers' work from first principles. How is it like other roles? Journalism, or consulting or teaching or whatever.

If I am doing a year in industry (4 year course) do I apply now in my second year or my third year when im doing my placement?
Generally firms will advise you to apply in your third year, but if your placement is going to run throughout the summer (some placements can be a full 12 months rather than 9) you may want to ask firms whether they can consider you this summer instead.
