A few of my favourites, which I haven't seen anyone else mention, include:
- If there was one thing that you could change about the firm, what would it be?
- If there was one thing that you wish would never change about the firm, what would it be?
- [Some combination of the above]
- [If you're talking to a partner who has been at the firm for a while] Why have you stayed at [firm x]?
I have abbreviated the questions, leaving just the main essence - I tend to have a little preamble/joke beforehand to provoke a more humorous and open discussion on the question's subject! As with all specific interview advice, this comes with a health warning - use at your own discretion!
Just to exemplify how this might play out - I interviewed with an elite US firm and asked (3). I joked about how naturally the firm is of course flawless, but I like to ask all law firms these questions etc. and it got a laugh around the (virtual) room. What then precipitated was quite an honest discussion about the firm, how it has had some weaknesses in the past, how they have been rectified, and how they have strengthened certain aspects of their business model which they were especially proud of. I've had similar experiences at other firms, and the question seems (
for me) to lighten the atmosphere and build a rapport with your interviewers.
There are also some more standard questions:
- I read about [firm x]'s plan for 2015-2020, which stated [abc] - what is [firm x]'s plan for the next 5 years?
And some more...challenging questions (again, this comes with a health warning - use at your own discretion!):
- How is [firm x] defending its [type of work y] mandate against [firm w] (/[type of firm z])?
