Good question. I think it’s best to write about both - why it interests you and why it’s relevant. Doesn’t matter what the story is about. If you try and manufacture interest then it may come back to bite you. So would suggest genuine interest you can back up. IPO would be good if you want to go into commercial/corporate and justify interest. GDPR/cyber is a complicated topic (in my opinion) and maybe harder to justify genuine interest in. I mean to me it doesn’t sound genuine if you’re saying I’m interested in cyber because you had a cyber attack.
