Balancing work with applications

Hi all! So I have just received an opportunity to intern at a venture capital firm for the next 6 months. As I am taking a gap semester, this is no problems in terms of studies.

However, I had been planning to use the upcoming September-December break to really grind my law applications and get them up to par. With the internship, this would be a lot more difficult. I was wondering if anyone had any insights balancing their full time jobs with applications? Is it too difficult that I should give up this opportunity? Really wanted to try working in a finance capacity and I feel it could help me in my applications, but I don’t want to miss out on law apps.

I wouldn’t give up this opportunity. It will be a fantastic addition to your CV/application. The compromise to me would be the number of applications you make rather than giving up this opportunity.

You’ll be entitled to annual leave as part of your job. Maybe plan to take off a couple of days per month during busy application season to focus on your applications.

Thank you Jessica for your input! In terms of how this looks on my CV/application, would they query why I am interning at a VC rather than a law firm? Personally, I just wanted to round out my understanding of ECM and the actors involved- this is as my interest is in capital markets and corporate finance in general is the area I want to practice in in the future.

Yes - I’ll delete one or the other!
Thank you!

No - not at all. Law firms are not amazing at taking on interns for long periods of time and this is a great (and competitive) internship that will give you a lot of learning.

Yes, at interview you may be asked why you don’t want to carry on that career path, but I suspect you will have lots of logical reasoning as to why that is the case.

Thank you Jessica this puts my mind at ease! I just got an informal offer for a start up firm and am now contemplating between the two. The VC is overall more competitive/prestigious I guess but would choosing the start up be detrimental in any way (seeing as I am quite keen on their job scope and their willingness to allow part time internships- so I can work on my apps)?

Either will be fine. You have to choose what is best for you.
