I was wondering if anyone had any tips for applying for a TC to a firm you currently work at as a legal assistant/paralegal etc.? Especially for the "why firm" part - how would I leverage on my current experience at the firm, beyond just saying something vague like "everyone has been really nice to work with"?

That said, your position as a paralegal might give you a unique perspective into the inner workings of the firm, which can really strengthen your application and ensure it's really tailored to them.
When tackling the “why this firm” question, consider drawing on the specific experiences you’ve had so far. Think about the type of work you’ve been exposed to, not just in your own team but across the office. Have there been particularly client matters that you've worked on or alongside particular departments that has made you eager to pursue your legal career at this firm? If so, I think this would be the perfect time to mention this and why it's deepened your interest in joining the firm as a trainee solicitor.
You can also reflect on any insights you’ve gained about the firm’s key sectors or clients. Have you gained a better appreciation or interest in the sectors the firm works in, and what is it about them that you now find interesting? Does the firm advise particular types of clients that you've come to better understand as a result of joining the firm as a paralegal and has made you interested in advising such clients in the future?
You could also mention whether you’ve had the chance to connect or speak with any partners, senior associates, or other colleagues who have mentored or inspired you. This could be a great way to show that your relationships at the firm have played an active role in furthering your desire to train there. This would also allow you to say more than just "my colleagues have been quite nice to work with". This way, you've shown the way your professional relationships have actually shaped your professional interests.
Finally, think about what you’ve learned about the firm overall. For instance, has the international or cross-border nature of the work stood out to you? Are there unique aspects of the training contract, such as innovative seat structures or secondment opportunities, that make you even more eager to continue your career with the firm? If so, why have these aspects of the firm cemented your desire to begin your legal career with them?
Overall, I encourage you to focus on the specific insights you’ve gained so far. This will allow you to draft a thoughtful and personal answer that veers away from the generic and capitalises on your experiences as a paralegal with the firm.
