Anxious international girlie takes on training contracts and vac schemes

Hey! I've been lurking for a few months so I thought I'd start my own thread here. I know it's fairly early days for the application cycle, but I figured I could make this and update it over the year as a little diary to record the process in real time/to keep myself accountable on this journey. This is my second application cycle, and as an international student, I'm really anxious about not getting a TC by the end of the year because it basically means I get kicked out of the country otherwise. With final year, working part time, being in the executive committees for 3+ societies and working as a brand ambassador, I know that I'm going to be in the trenches over the next year or so, but I guess it's worth it if I get a TC at the end of it ...?

Background
  • I'm a final year non-law (History & International Relations) international student studying at a Top 5-10 uni (not RG though, you may be able to guess it based on that haha). I did all my pre-university education outside of the UK
  • I have strong A Levels am currently on track for a strong first (fingers crossed it stays that way)
  • In terms of my legal experience, I have completed two legal internships (one at a small high-street style family law firm, another at a bigger commercial litigation firm) and am about to complete my third internship at an U.S. firm in investment funds (all of these internships have been in my home country)
  • My non-legal experience includes working as a senior student ambassador, as a brand ambassador for a law-adjacent company, and am in the executive committee of three societies (just edited this for anonymity’s sake)
  • I applied last cycle to about 5-6 firms for vacation schemes/summer internships in both the UK and my home country (along with some other non-law jobs, all of which I did not get). In hindsight, my applications were all sub-par, but by some miracle of god I got past the application stage for Mishcon de Reya and Fragomen. Didn't get past the video interview stage for either firm, but was lucky enough to land an internship at an U.S. firm in my home country in April
Criteria in firms / tentative firm list
Working the aforementioned three legal internships has made me realise that I'm interested in both private client and commercial law, so I'm planning on applying to firms that have a wide variety of practice areas in both private client (ideally has family and immigration practice areas) and commercial fields. I'm also very interested in firms with a smaller trainee intake that really gives trainees early responsibility. I'm interested in a mix of international and national firms. If the firm is international, I'd like the firm to have an office in my home country. My firm list was initially quite private client focussed, but having enjoyed my investment funds internship, I need to sit down and reevaluate my list.

Here's my tentative firm list so far. Don't know whether I'll apply to all of them, but I'll put an asterisk next to the ones I definitely will apply to:
Next steps:
I finish my internship tomorrow, and I'll have three weeks or so before I go back for uni. I want to do the following in this time:
  • Firm research
  • Start thinking about my answers for firm questions (especially the big ones like why commercial law, why firm, why you etc.)
  • Writing out my work experience sections
  • Start drafting a cover letter
  • Getting my commercial awareness up through learning about M&A, PE and keeping up with the news
  • Start practicing Watson Glazers/SJTs
Honestly this is a pretty ambitious list (especially considering I've got other commitments to manage and I want to spend time with my family before I go back to the UK), so the point is to just get going on these things before the academic year starts. I'll keep you all updated over the year!

(I realise that is basically an essay, I’m just a yapper at heart to be honest)

Update!

I applied to Hogan Lovell's Non-Russell Group Mentoring Scheme in collaboration with Aspiring Solicitors at the 11th hour, and got shortlisted for the next stage (the Watson Glazer test). Personally I'm a little confused at why a Watson Glazer test was necessary, but I completed it nonetheless. It was good practice for the upcoming cycle. I don't think I did very well on it due to a lack of practice, but I suppose we'll see.

Aside from that, I finished my internship, which leaves me one month of summer before going back to uni. I've also been researching law firms in preparation for the upcoming cycle, updated my CV and have been working on writing out my work experience sections for those longer free text boxes.

Hey! I think this a great idea and I wish you all the best. I'm in a similar situation so I can understand the struggle. I am curious, but have considered applying for a graduate visa? I hope you secure a TC by the end of this year but if you don't you are eligible for the graduate visa route and can stay for up to two years in the UK to find a job. So you don't necessarily get kicked out of the country after this year.

Hi!

I'm an international graduate. Studied IR too before the GDL/LPC. I recently received a TC and can very much relate to your visa expiring situation. I would be happy to provide some guidance on this! I think internationals have to have a slightly different strategy to everyone else. Happy to discuss mine with you if you want!

Good luck!

Thanks so much for that! I'm aware of the graduate visa route and I may end up applying for it at the end of the year, depending on how applications go. My Plan B is to self-fund the PGDL, but that's dependent on a lot of personal circumstances.

Hi @sapphireoreos I hope you're well - I just read your post and it sounds like you have a good solid plan. I just wanted to draw to your attention that we don't have a private client practice (as you've listed above) in our London office. I didn't want you to spend time on an application for a firm that isn't suited to your aims and aspirations! Happy to talk if you would like to, please let me know, Gemma.

Hi, former international student here. I believe your graduate visa allows you to stay in the UK 2 years after graduation.

I’m aware that the grad visa is an option, and thanks for suggesting that! I’m not sure whether I’ll be able to meet its financial requirements by the time I apply, however.

Thank you for your offer Gemma! I’m currently trying to decide whether U.S. firms is a good fit for me, as I really did enjoy the private client work experiences I’ve done. That being said, I did complete an internship in funds with a U.S. firm a few weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised over my enjoyment of non-contentious work, and I particularly enjoyed the firm’s culture. I am also very keen on training at a firm with a smaller intake, as I’ve found from experience that it is what aligns best with my working style and aspirations. I’m not super sure on what else I can do to figure out whether commercial law is for me, as I don’t want to prematurely close doors!

Hi Gemma, thanks for your kind offer and I'm so sorry for my late reply! I ended up not using TCLA for a few months and also decided not to apply to U.S. firms as I feel they don't currently align with what I'm looking for training-wise. That being said, I'm sure you're very busy looking through applications since they've closed, so best of luck with that!

Update three months in because I dropped off TCLA for a few months! It's been a super busy semester at uni, and it's scary to think that I only have one left to go :( Graduation is actually a terrifying prospect that I can’t mentally wrap my head around.

I’ve also now got two mentors which has been invaluable 🙏 Anyways here’s what’s happened application-wise:

Applied:
HSF summer VS: Rejected after their SJT (it is literally such a silly test and from what I've heard it's not just me saying that). Big believer in everything happens for a reason so I’m telling myself rejection is redirection!
Taylor Wessing summer VS: submitted their application and just completed their online test. They said they won't come back to me until end of January at the latest so let's see where it goes. Hopefully I’m through 🙏 I just want something PLEASE

Applications in the works:
Mishcon de Reya summer VS: they were my top firm last cycle but I’m now taking a high effort low hopes approach with applications, so I’m less bothered about them. Obviously I want a TC but I know rejections aren’t personal so. I got to the VI last year so hopefully we can do that again (and advance further into the process!) I’ve done a first round draft but I’m not happy with it currently, so I need to rework it (and get someone to review it for me 🙏)
Farrer summer VS and TC: really like their application and their vibe from their virtual events and open days, but the amount they expect you to write is ridiculous. Still applying though.
Forsters summer VS: this is due in 6 January but they’re rolling 💀
Stephenson Harwood summer VS: 50-50 on applying but I’m 1/3s done with the first draft. Also 600 words per question is heavy
Penningtons Manches Cooper summer VS: another firm I like a lot but haven’t researched into much.
Charles Russell Speechlys summer VS: another firm I really like. I’d say they’re top 3 to 5 depending on when you ask
Mills & Reeve summer VS: their application process is straightforward so I need to bite the bullet and submit it soon. It’s mostly just tests so need to practice for those.

Need to start Withers summer VS (another top choice!) and (maybe) Harbottle direct TC and/or Burges Salmon summer VS applications soon.

I have one more assignment for uni left this semester due Friday but after that, it’s full steam ahead for applications this winter break 😍😍😍 this is not going to be fun at all since most of these are due early January 💀🤩

I’m currently 8 hours ahead of UK time since I’m back home, and I just opened my email to see a Taylor Wessing PFO that was sent last night post-test 😍 I thought I did well in the test and did quite a bit of practice for the test so that’s a shame, but I guess this means I just need to work really hard on the other firms, which I like more anyways. Oh well

I submitted my application for Mills & Reeve yesterday and am hoping to get my application to Mishcon de Reya in by the end of the week (both summer vac schemes). I have also just submitted my last university assessment of the semester so it's full steam ahead with applications. I'm 75% happy with my Mishcon application but I feel that my why Mishcon section is not specific enough. Their first question is why commercial law x why Mishcon within 300 words. Rather cheeky of them honestly.

M&R only use the blended assessment in the first stage to decide whether to move candidates to the next stage. I'm scared of those as these tests are not my strength! Ugh this is exhausting.

But I'm trying to tell myself that if I got past the first application stage once, what's stopping me from doing so again? Seeing everyone's successes on LinkedIn has fired up my desire to get a TC, so let's get on that application grind!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone has had a great holiday season. When not doing the usual holiday things like spending time with immediate and extended families, I've spent a lot of my holiday season doing VS/TC applications due to my own time mismanagement, oops ...

Shoutout to my spreadsheet supertracker, which has allowed me to cut down on the amount of time I write unique answers in favour of quality (well that's the plan). Also I do feel like you get faster at writing applications as you do more and more of them if that makes sense?

But anyways! A little status update of my applications. Apologies for how long this is, it's been an eventful week and a half (application-wise).

Submitted Applications:
Forsters Summer VS: I submitted it on New Year's Eve (oops). They're rolling and their deadline was on the 6th of January so I don't have high hopes for this. Let's see how it goes, but I do like them and they seem like good vibes. They also sent me an email yesterday saying that everyone who applied around then will hear back by the end of next week which is surprisingly quick for law? Hoping it's good things!
Farrer & Co Summer VS and Direct TC: I went to a few events, and really liked their vibes, so I would love to see my application progress further! They only invite around 50 people to ACs so I'm not particularly hopeful. Having 8+ questions, a cover letter (each of which is 250-350 words each) and separate legal and non-legal work history sections is diabolical tbh. A vac scheme application also doesn't count as an automatic TC application, which is also crazy. I still filled it out though 🤷‍♂️ But I really like their recruitment process, everyone was super nice at the Virtual Open Day and their ACs play to my strengths, so I'd love to get a place. I applied to both their summer vac scheme and their direct TC.
Penningtons Manches Cooper Summer VS: This application was a PAIN to write, as I really hated some of their questions, their cover letter was LONG and very specific. But I like them so I applied, and I also heard from a trainee that they really only take vac schemers as trainees so it had to be done. I thought I had submitted everything but turns out I had to do a separate application form and a separate CRS form which was annoying.

Tests:
🧠 Mills & Reeve Summer VS: I also received an automatic test invite for Mills & Reeve, and I'm worried about it because I SUCK at tests.

Applications in the works:
✍️ Withers Summer VS (due 12 January): A top 3 firm for me but the 60 word word count is tough. They do really great work, and working in the Old Bailey sounds super cool!! I think I've cracked how to tackle these questions, thanks to a very kind TCLA member. It's due on the 12th but it is rolling ... and uses tests (which are the bane of my existence) ...
✍️ Charles Russell Speechlys Summer VS (due 15 January): I really like them and this application isn't too bad, as they're similar to a lot of the questions I've already done!
✍️ Stephenson Harwood Summer VS (due 31 January): ugh I might not submit an application for this. Grad rec and the firm seems nice, but the questions are 600 words each :/, are frankly nasty questions and I've heard on TCLA they ghost people (yikes). We'll see though!

Applications to do:
After I've finished the applications above, it'll be full steam ahead for direct TC applications!
📝 Harbottle & Lewis Direct TC (due 31 January): Hoping I can do some recycling here. They were initially on my radar but not massively, but I went to a talk they did and I liked them. Definitely need to get on this soon, especially since they're rolling.
📝 Wedlake Bell Direct TC (due 1 May 2025): I spoke to a NQ from my university about the firm in October, and I really liked what I heard! They're rolling so I want to get an application in by February. I would apply for their vacation scheme but it's during my grad week.
📝 Macfarlanes Direct TC (due 27 June 2025): This one is a HUGE maybe. I applied for their summer VS last cycle (to no avail), and I don't know whether I like them enough to apply. So I'll probably apply for them if I don't hear anything good back from the other firms. I was going to apply for the summer VS but it was due when Farrer and PMC were, so I thought it would be better to focus on those two since I like them better.

Thanks so much, hope it all works out! Hahah I’m super type A with this kind of thing (not with very much else tbh) so I love having everything super neatly laid out and organised like this because it makes my brain happy 😂 how’s your application journey?
