So, so happy for you!!! Very well deserved. You have been absolutely amazing on the forum and I hope you'll keep us clued into what happens with your VS (and beyond!).
Wishing you the very best 😇😇😇
I think it's more important to be enthusiastic to learn and build your knowledge about that department rather than to demonstrate a solid understanding from the get go. There's nothing wrong with wanting to develop a solid understanding, I just wouldn't stress it if you weren't able to do it...
@lawnoob TCLA's newsletter, Watson's Daily, the Lawyer and Financial Times were really useful for this when I was applying. If you're a student, you may be able to get the latter two from your university library.
@summer207 I think @Jessica Booker has laid out your options really well. I've not been in your position as I applied for TCs from my home country after I was done with my undergrad and first postgrad degree, so I don't know if I can be of greater help than Jessica!
Hi @lawnoob I'm glad you found this thread useful! I have read that some firms are planning to continue the online AC model because of the convenience it offers. However, I am unsure of the extent to which this will be implemented, given that we are only just beginning to emerge from the...
For this week, I'd like to recognise @DTS for their super helpful post on Ashurst's online assessments here. We haven't seen much information on this on the forum so thank you for making a most useful contribution! 👏👏👏
Please see this post here for information on how you can claim your prize!

Vacation Scheme Didn't Work Out? Things You Should Consider About Making Direct TC Applications
You don't need any legal work experience at all- however, it is crucial that you demonstrate you know how law firms work as a business, the role they play in a deal and the work that lawyers do in your applications form. The easiest way to do this is through legal work experience, but I have...
You've understood the teams correctly but I don't think you're using the term 'bundle' in the right context re law firms as this generally refers to selling certain legal services and products at fixed price tags.
When firms pitch their services to potential clients for a particular deal or...
How do you think it's impacting your performance? Maybe we can address this and have you feeling like you're in a better position for your remaining interviews?
Feel free to PM if you'd prefer going into any details privately!
I was in the same boat as you when I first started making applications and the thing that helped was attending webinars and just listening to lawyers talk about their work and taking down notes on the technicalities of it- maybe you'd find that useful too.
Break down of my attempt to answer...
@DTS and @Abii just wanted to shout you out for having a mature, respectful discussion on this topic on the forum. Discussions like this help set the tone for the community and I am thankful to you both for your thoughtfulness in the manner of your posting.
I also wanted to chip in with some...
@Zubin so happy for you! This is such stellar feedback and I hope you take some time to celebrate it.
Completely agree with what you said about messing up one part of the AC and still smashing others- the whole point of an AC is to show the firm your ability to make mistakes, recover from...
You need to focus more on talking about the role of a commercial lawyer rather than your commercial awareness or how law firms operate as a business.
Elaborate on how commercial lawyers advise their clients, work with other lawyers on deals, represent their clients in negotiations, are...
Varies from firm to firm but some firms have policies around filling places internally before they open to external candidates. If they fill all places internally, they'll not consider external applications. Or some will not consider direct TC apps if all positions have been filled with VS...
Do they recruit through direct TCs? If yes, you could ask to be shifted on to it. If that's not possible, I'd be prepared to either give up the VS or speak to your employer about taking unpaid leave to do the VS (if there is not conflict of interest, that is).
Hope for the best and prepare for the worst- you gave it a good shot and as cliché as it sounds, that's really all that matters at the end of the day. Rooting for you 🤞
