You apply for both at the same time - you're automatically considered for a TC in a vac scheme application as the firm recruits at least 95% of its trainees from its vac schemes. I don't think any of my intake were recruited from the direct TC route so it's really the only way the firm recruits :)

Firms tend to be more flexible regarding the GDL. For instance, my firm, Gibson Dunn, has allowed me to do the GDL at ULaw as it has a campus close to where I live but they would prefer me to do the LPC at BPP with the rest of my cohort, apart from anything else so that we can get to know each...

For me the biggest reward is the opportunity to work with incredibly smart people every day and continually learn something new. Also, the opportunity to become one of the best in your field at a particular practice area and work internationally etc. could also be considered important rewards
Whoever told you that you can't get a law internship as a non-law student is mistaken - it is very possible to do so! Many vacation scheme places and training contracts are given to non-law students. In my biased opinion (I studied History and Spanish) studying a non-law degree can be more...
