Hi everyone,
If you have any questions you would like to ask ahead of our vacation scheme deadline on Sunday, I'll be checking this forum all this week, so feel free to ask and I'll reply.
Thanks,
Paul
Hi @Dwight
There tends to be very little difference in competitiveness for vacation schemes. I wouldn't let this affect which of the schemes you want to apply for.
We recruit 15 trainees per intake - so 15 in 2023, 15 in 2014 etc.
I hope that explains.
Thanks,
Paul
Hi @hopefullylaw2000
Thanks for your question. Yes, we always consider mitigating circumstances, so don't let this hold you back from applying.
Thanks,
Paul
Hi @keepmewherethelightis
Thanks for the question. I'm afraid it's as straightforward as it says in the FAQs. We can't offer VISAs for a two-week vacation scheme.
All our schemes will be running in-person in our London office this academic year.
I hope that explains.

Hi @YJyj
The open day is open to everyone (undergraduates, postgraduates, graduates etc) who is interested in knowing more about Shearman & Sterling. We do have an event specifically for 1st year students called Head Start - so that might be a better option for people who are only starting to...
Hi @LateralLawyer
I think this is a great question. I also do lateral recruitment (as well as grad rec) so know a bit about this. Here are my thoughts:
Each of the US firms you've listed will be different. Not all US firms are the same, in the same way that not all UK firms are the same...
Hi everyone,
Our next series of university presentation dates are now confirmed. We will be running online and in-person events covering "Everything you need to know to apply for Training Contracts with US law firms".
You can book your place here: https://shearman.eventbrite.co.uk/
Hi @Taz
For your work experience entries, it's best to write a paragraph simply explaining what the work experience was, key duties, responsibilities, achievements etc.
No need to link everything back to becoming a trainee.
Thanks,
Paul
Hi @Dwight
The assessment centre is built into the vacation scheme, so you will do the assessment centre exercises during your two weeks with us.
Thanks,
Paul
Hi @corplaw0702
It's difficult for me to say. It's your visa, so you need to figure out what you are allowed to do.
The vacation schemes are full-time (for 2-weeks), so it doesn't look like you can as a working week is usually 35 hours, but as I said, it's a little difficult for me to advise...
Hi @summer207
We've actually changed the date of our Summer Vacation Scheme. It will now run from 21 June - 1 July, so you should be ok.

Thanks,
Paul
Hi @nehasunil88
Thanks for the question. It's clear you have already made an excellent choice - planning to apply to Shearman & Sterling!
Re the SQE - all law firms will be moving to this in the next couple of years with there being a transitional period. Studying the SQE will not be a...
Hi @Dwight
The application questions are detailed in the video.
Yes, all of our schemes are open to final year students, whether they are studying law or not.
Thanks,
Paul
Hi @k.k
Yes we have minimum academic requirements (most firms do). If a candidate has mitigating circumstances that have affected their academic performance, then we will absolutely take this into consideration.
Thanks,
Paul
