I had that before and it didn’t make a difference. The SJT is more important I think.

Is that something a US firm is more likely to do like Sidley that place a lot of emphasis on grades or does it more depend on how much they like the candidate to give them a second chance?
Also wouldn’t it have to be part of the TC employment contract terms so the candidate would at least know...
This is interesting. I didn’t know GR had that much power to decide who they like or not. In the end partners and associates will have to work with the trainee and like them so why would GR’s subjective option matter so much?

I don’t wanna derail it even further but surely attending an open day is valuable on an application. Of course it’s up to the applicant to make a good impression on the day by starting conversations and asking good questions/create engaging discussions to help with the “why this firm” section...

so for the 'why me' section of a cover letter - what exactly do they want to know? Do I write about my work experience -
ie for job X found creative ways to teach the alphabet and then apply how that would make me a good solicitor?
or is it awards and prizes I won?

no typo. It says that they get more people applying than they can handle (aka accommodate). It’s grammatically and logically correct and not an insult :)
